| I'm applying to NYU Gallatin for Spring '08.
I'm kind of worried because my college GPA is pretty bad.
I was at Rice University for a year, but I did really badly second semester and dropped to 9 hours. my cumulative college GPA is a 2.8
I'm taking a year or two off from Rice but I decided I wanted to apply to NYU for spring because I've always loved Gallatin.
my sats are 2200 (800v, 680m, 720w)
my sat ii's are US history 780, biology 750
my high school gpa was a 4.2 weighted, but the last semester of senior year I got a D for calculus ap and a C in biology ap. I don't know what it is exactly is now, but i still graduated summa cum laude.
AP scores- 5 in english, 5 in US History
I have extenuating circumstances for my second semester in college (I'm writing a letter explaining it), but I'm not sure if they'll accept me with a 2.8 gpa. and my senior year grades are horrible. I dont know what my chances are. what do you think? |

| june- Impressive high school GPA and test scores; you are obviously an intelligent person capable of a lot. I think that as long as your reasons for the 2.8 are valid and worthy, you will still look like an impressive applicant. That being said, NYU says themselves that the college gpa is easily the most important factor in deciding who is admitted.
Nevertheless, the process is holistic. Do you have any ec's in college? Work experience, volunteer activity, campus involvement, etc.? Can you write a convincing essay and get a good teacher recommendation? Can you show Gallatin that you are a Gallatin student, not someone applying for the sake of applying? |

| how much does it help to be Persian and female?
I know with public schools in Cali, they dont care, but I dont know about privates, or NYU specifically.
Will this be viewed as a good thing? |

| academic - are you a Persian international student or of Persian decent? Being of Persian decent places you in the minority and may help your chances of being accepted. That being said, the female-to-male ratio at NYU is something in the neighborhood of 60% female to 40% male, give or take. It has been mentioned by some NYU counselors that being a male is an advantage because they are the minority. I am not sure how much these actually play a role in admissions, but I think that they will be more inclined to accept the best-qualified applicant. |

| i'm iranian-american, born in cali.
its weird that its an advantage. i'm so used to public schools and them not caring that i'm a minority lol. yay to privates...
then again, i'm not URM...like black/hispanic....i'm part of the most educated minority in america..... that probably doesn't help |

| modern, i read in some college guide book a while ago that being asian can actually hurt your chances because SO many over-qualified and qualified asians apply to college. im half asian and half white, so im not going to say that i am asian since they ask you what you "identify with the most". |

| Everyone - minority status (or lack thereof) is not the sole determining factor behind the decision-making process. They will be more inclined to accept the qualified candidate based on their holistic review.
Mandela and Modern, where are you two applying? Also, what year are you? I looked previously and found some stats, but not your years or choices.
FYI- Gallatin, I am a sophomore.

| obviously minorty status doesnt break or make your application. i did not say that. i was merely stating that i read somewhere that being asian can work against you in some way, and i think we can all know that that "someway" is not major.
im applying fall 08 to CAS as a sophmore. |
