Wharton...

I forgot how much I hate the UPenn app. So many questions on the supplement.

Does Penn give you like some password or ID to check if your materials have come in?

Does Penn use the final transcript for making decisions or do they just use it to verify good standing after they accepted and rejected students?

I actually called Penn today about midterm vs final grades.

Midterm grades (required): Used in the admission evaluation process

Final Grades: Not used in evaluation process, confirms acceptance (barring extremely low grades)

Penn makes its first batch decision during the first 10 days of May, so pretty low chance that final grades are figured into the equation.

1st Batch (decision roughly received during may 13-20): Definite Acceptances and Outright Rejections

2nd Batch (decision roughly received during may may 20-27): Mostly all Rejections

3rd Batch (decision roughly received during june 2-9): Only acceptances are off an internal waitlist, for which spots open up when 1st Batch accepted applicants turn down offer. Majority of applicants in this batch receive rejections as very few are taken off waitlist.

In conclusion, applicants should hope to fall into the first batch of acceptances, because after that, the already low Penn transfer rate essentially goes down to essentially zero.

Hope that helps!

- Wharton sophomore transfer hopeful from University of Michigan.

(Correct me if I'm wrong or misinformed, basing this off previous year posts and trends. My only goal is to clarify the confusing transfer process. Because, inevitable every year, applicants complain about not receiving their decision on time.)

Essay Length

Say, how long were everyone's essays?

My "reasons for transferring" essay was about 2 pages 1.5 spaced (~850 words) A little long, but I have already transferred once and had to explain the reason for transferring again.

My second one is about 1,000 words long.

I am just wondering because I fear that these might be a bit too long. There is no word or page limit indicated on application, but I am just wondering whether there is one implied, or just a general rule that application essays should be relatively brief.

xferjhcn-

Your GPA is just too low. Perhaps your recs/essays will counterbalance?

It is certainly nice to be done with the application, as now all I can do is sit and wait. I cannot forsee myself actually getting in, if for no other reason than that my HS numbers are weak, and I'm applying as a rising sophmore, meaning that data still matters.

What I wonder about is the second essay. I chose the pg 217 option, and spoke about winning a seat in Knesset. But I worry that many of the subtleties, which hinge upon a familiarity with Israeli culture and politics, will be picked up on at all.

I think its the 31st, because the Dean's form says postmark by the fifteenth, and I am guessing that it is also from 2007. I only just took my first midterm for a class last thursday, so it would have been all but impossible for that teacher to hedge a guess as to my grade. I Wouldn't even really have on yet. I think thats their reasoning behind the later deadline.

By the way....not to be a pest, but my question on essay length has not really been answered at all. I am just a bit curious and Id like to hear how much you all wrote.
