They are working with BWB as well as Keep America Beautiful. Just to give a couple of examples (we've done much more) this year we have beautified our campus and cleaned up our city's river bed (it's dry). PTK can keep you very busy!

yo niggit42 i'm from ASA chapter too ^^

Back to the topic, IMO the main part of PTK or other honor ones is involvement. I myself think PTK as a club/organization where I can make some friends and do activities, therefore it benefits my EC. Being a member alone doesn't matter much. If you do nothing, it's really a scam for you because you just waste the membership fee ^^.

Btw for ppls asking, PTK is for community colleges only. If you study in a 4-year schools then I guess you have better societies to join . If you are in cc and your school don't have a chapter, why not try to open one yourself? That looks incredible on apps

National Deans List

National dean’s list isn't a scam, I'm not sure how it may help you when you transfer, but it doesn’t cost anything to be published in the national dean’s list book.

I am also a member of PTK and they are not a scam, I have personally been offered scholarships to Columbia University in NY and Richmond in London. I also know that they just worked out a deal with the University of Michigan, every PTK member gets a 5k scholarship just for being a PTK member, so is that worth your $75.

Phew, lots to reply to here...

Quote:
umm generally speaking, a 3.4 isn't low for a college gpa..
It's low for an honor society. It's a strong GPA for an average student but is very low for honors students.

Would I be considered a candidate if there is no chapter of Phi Theta Kappa in my school?
No, your college must have a chapter in order for you to be a member. You can find information on chartering a chapter here. PM me if you want some help. There is also information at http://www.ptk.org/chapters/chartering/

Regarding Bill Clinton being a Golden Key alumnus: No, he isn't. It wasn't even founded until he was out of college. He is an honorary member. It's kinda like saying Eleanor Roosevelt attended and graduated from Russell Sage College because they gave her an honorary degree. It means nothing.

Additionally, Phi Theta Kappa was using "The Golden Key" as the name of its publication well before the Golden Key society was ever dreamt of. There are about $400,000 total worth of scholarships for Golden Key members; the total for Phi Theta Kappa is pushing $40 million now. Transfer applications often ask if you are a Phi Theta Kappan; I have never seen Golden Key mentioned.

Who's Who Honors are not a scam. The books are legitimate.
No one doubts that the books are real. What people are saying, correctly, is that they are meaningless. It is about as much of an "honor" as your mom getting a "My Child Is a Super Student at Podunk Middle School" bumper sticker.

Quote:
The National Dean's List is a legitimate honor. You must be nominated and have a high GPA.
Every single Phi Theta Kappa member is automatically "nominated" for Phi Theta Kappa. The book company just buys the list of new inductees and spams people to join. It's not an honor if everyone else has it.

Quote:
It is a significant honor, and many places do look for it.
Name one. Seriously. I'm curious.

Quote:
If you really are concerned actually go ask your college councilor or advisor.
And any advisor worth their salt will tell you what others have said, which is that NDL and Who's Who are scams and somewhat embarrassing to list on your applications. We are specifically told not to do it.

Quote:
Btw for ppls asking, PTK is for community colleges only.
No, it's not. There are plenty of junior colleges, like Landmark and Dean, that have chapters, and there are also chapters at colleges that offer Bachelor's programs in addition to the Associate ones. But yes, it is primarily community colleges.

In my opinion, Phi Beta Kappa was and is the only honor society worth joining. It has the most stringent requirements (both for its member colleges and for induction) and is the oldest honor society in the United States.

I would disagree with that. Although it is the most difficult honor society to be accepted into academically, that doesn't mean you can't have a wonderful experience in another organization. If Phi Beta Kappa is an option for you, great, but not everyone attends a college with a chapter (Bryn Mawr and Harvey Mudd are two top examples), nor does every top student qualify for it. There's no reason to limit yourself to one option.
