On behalf of a friend--does the Odyssey Scholarship include transfer students?

Just to offer the other side of the story and say what no one wants to hear...
Don't get your hopes up guys, Uchicago has become incredibly competitive; gone are the days of the so-called "open admissions" where almost anyone could get admitted if they could handle the work. If you look at the previous threads there were a LOT of really stellar applicants who were true believers in the UChicago way who got waitlisted or denied while others who only applied for the prestige got accepted.
Transfer admissions is likely going to be even tougher next year so unless you were competitive to get in as a freshman you should probably devote your efforts elsewhere. I'm not saying you shouldn't keep dreaming and apply anyways but be realistic.
There are a lot of other great schools where you can get an education close to that of UChicago and I guarantee you that they probably have a better social scene. Even though I didn't get in I really love the school where I'm at now and am challenged a lot more than I thought I would be. I've also gotten involved in stuff I never would have had the opportunity to experience and I would almost go so far as to say I'm better off *gasp* having not been accepted to UChicago.
I wish all of you the best of luck and hope that all of you get in but the statistics show that most of you won't. I apologize for being 'that guy' I realize no one wants to hear the negativity but someone has to ground all of this dreaming in reality lol.

I'm considering U of C because my professor, who both studied and taught classes at U of C, recommended the school to me. She said that she'd lobby on my behalf...I don't know if she has any clout, but I can only cross my fingers and try.

Agree completely. It's great to dream, but have a couple solid back-up plans.
You guys should check out the '08 UChicago transfer threads and see the stats of U of C rejects. I got into Cornell and WashU with my 3.94 from a LAC, 33 ACT, lots of 5's and 4's on AP exams, and a 4.1 HS GPA, but ultimately was denied by Chicago after an EA defer. And I was a true believer in the Chicago philosophy, voracious reader, well acquainted with the U of C ethos, etc.
With a transfer acceptance rate almost equal to that of HYPS, you should keep in mind that there's about a 90% chance you will get rejected by Chicago.
Good luck but seriously remember that Chicago is just one of many means to the same end: being a broadly educated human being.

I completely agree with you about UChicago. Let's hope that I can get in as a sophomore transfer. I am really worried about my situation.

If you have the opportunity, interview with UChicago. I think like 3/4 of admitted students all chose to have an interview option.

Caillbotte-
Solid stats, I'm surprised you weren't admitted. That makes me pretty nervous about applying... Especially considering I had a 27 ACT, yikes.

Es Four, yes it is very difficult to be admitted to the University of Chicago, just as it is difficult to be admitted to all competitive universities. What's even more confusing is that the admissions officers have no real rhyme or reason for their selection choices, that is a fact. What you should realize though is that focusing on your "stats" and what not, are not the determining factor, what these colleges care about is what you will contribute to the student body and the academic atmosphere of their institution. They want to know what makes you unique and a good candidate for enhancing their school. Granted, being an amazing person doesn't mean you will get in and not getting in does not mean you are not an incredible individual; its a simple matter of there are only so many spaces open and they have to select the students they think are the best for their school to fill those spaces. So focus on building a resume that shows them why you are the best of the candidates that you will compared against, and don't worry so much about your standardized test stats, instead focus on your extracurriculars and grades. |

Hi everyone,
I'm planning to transfer to University of Chicago for Economics, but I have a few questions.
My stats:
-Freshman at a top-ranking Canadian University, majoring in Commerce
-3.7 GPA for high school, 10 APs, honor courses
-1340 SAT (Wr/M), will retake
-approx. 3.7 term 1 GPA ( http://www.ouac.on.ca/omsas/pdf/c_omsas_b.pdf) rigorous course load
-average high school ECs
1. What are the pros and cons of transfering after year 1 versus transferring after year 2?
2. How does UC look at my AP credits? Will they include the AP credits in the 60 credit maximum?
3. Any more advice?

Hi guys! How have you been getting on in your applications, etc? I have been swamped with work and so haven't had the time to get back on to College Confidential. I am even more sure than ever about transferring, though, which I did not think was possible earlier this year.

Hey, I started writing essay right now.
First semester so far is great, I would take much more competitive course next sem.
How you guys doing? I'm kinda worried about rems, I got one great, but my school is soo large, the prof from whom I want to get a rem (because it's the course i major in) does not even want to answer my question beyond simple stupid questions within the course, let alone building a good relationship. I dunno what to do right now....I may need to find other profs.

My situation is strange in that I was accepted as a freshman to UChicago and sent in my deposit, but was coerced by my parents into going somewhere else. When I emailed someone in admissions I was told I would have to apply transfer like everybody else and would not receive preferential treatment. Is this true?
