USC Transfer Housing

Hey guys, I was accepted a couple of weeks ago but I had to wait to hear from other schools until I decide where I want to go. I was wondering is it too late for on campus housing because I waited so long to apply for housing? Should I call the housing ppl to find out? If anyone could help me that would be great because on campus housing would be a crucial selling point for me to transfer.

Also, how hard do you think it would be to convince the Annenberg ppl to take me because one of my prof. that was supposed to write me a recommendation letter to the ppl at Annenberg just never did. Do you think it I explained that and showed them my record (Did great at Newhouse school, another top notch J school), that they would let me into Annenberg?

Yeah, I think you waited too long for housing. And Annenberg isn't accepting any journalism switches btw, I found this out at orientation.

Don't waste your money: housing is full yet again. God, I'm so disgusted with USC now. I applied for Fall of 2007, got Spring admission, didn't get housing on time, "updated" (re-applied) to Fall 2008, and still did not get housing. Worst part is that nobody at USC seems to give a damn to want to help me out. Now I'm stuck having to go back to my old school, or drop-out.

(I'm an OOS without a car, so on-campus housing was a priority for me.)

Twenty8- You didn't get housing for Spring semester? The Spring semester housing app. opens the first day of July and fills quickly too. That sucks. Why don't you try craigslist or the marketplace feature on facebook for non-university owned housing? There's a lots of postings and as soon as summer school is over, I assume there will be lots more.

Housing is always a gamble at large universities but if you're proactive and still want to attend then it's worth a shot.

Try conquest hosuing, they have a lot of off campus stuff a few minutes walk from campus. I was going to try and round people up at orientation to share an apartment with.

The problem for me is, I have no idea how safe or how far some of the private housing really is. Since I don't live in CA, and I don't have a car, location is crucial for me. I've spent all my life in the suburbs, so the term "rough area" varies considerably.

After this whole ordeal, I really feel like I got the shaft by USC. Nobody ever seems to be any help when I call them, either. School starts in a month, and I have no idea what I can do. I wish I knew someone at USC.

Maybe it's because I'm a guy and have never been targeted, but I think the safety thing is overblown. Mostly if you use common sense you'll be safe. Don't feel like your getting the shaft by USC. No offense to people who work those jobs, but they usually get paid little and are likely getting the phones ringing off the hook right now. The university is really dumb in doing stuff so late into the summer when starting so early, but you will not be the only one in that boat. Many of us will be trying to find roommates and locate off campus housing.

Selk21- I agree. I've lived in various parts of L.A. all my life and it's not bad at all. It's working class, nothing more, nothing less.

Yeah like I've never lived in a bad area, but when I lived in England a lot of my schoolmates lived in projects and it was fine. Obvi you don't want to go strolling thru there at 2 in the morning and holding your cellphone and pumping you iPod. If you smart and think, keep to main streets, don't flaunt your stuff in the open you'll all good. If you feel that unsafe carry pepperspray. I know a lot of girls at my last college had ones the size of a chapstick in their purses. Plus doesn't USC offer one of those campus safety shuttles at nights you cna call to get rides anyways?

Selk21- Yes. Personally, I plan on exploiting that service for my late classes, if need be.

haha my suitemate last year and a kid down the hall worked for the service at my last college and we'd call them to get a ride if we didn't feel like walking to get food downtown.
