Hey guys, I'm a California cc student and I was wondering if anyone has advice for me in regards to transferring to Syracuse. I'm in my second year with 45 units taken, a 3.5 gpa and currently taking 17 units this semester. I'm a business, specifically marketing, major and my coursework has been geared toward transferring to SDSU by following the CSU GE guide and SDSU's Business Admin. prereqs. I don't have too much as far as ec's but I was in DECA (for those who don't know its a huge marketing/business club for high school students with tens of thousands of members across the nation) and I was a state champion and did very well at the international conference. I'll appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Why would you want to transfer to Syracuse?

I was born and raised in San Diego but I have always loved being in the snow and in cold climates. That doesn't mean I don't like living in Socal because I love it down too here but I want to experience a different atmosphere for college. I'm going for a visit over winter break to see the campus for myself and make sure that I can handle an upstate NY winter lol. From what I have read, Syracuse offers a great college atmosphere for students while also having a pretty good business program. They also have a great school of communications so I can double major in advertising as well. In a nutshell, I really want to get away and experience something entirely different from what I am used to and Syracuse offers pretty much everything I am looking for.

I was born and raised in LA and have been looking at Syracuse as a possible place to transfer. I think that the polar difference in the atmosphere would be great for me. Keep us posted on that upstate NY winter though. D:

You got it, I'll post a description of my visit in this thread (though it is a while off). I think Syracuse could be a great place for Socal'ers who are looking for a change of scenery for college. I personally think I will love being in the completely new lifestyle and environment offered by Syracuse but I couldn't justify going to school there without first checking it out. Another one of the biggest draws for me is the social life of the campus. I've always thought that one of the best parts about college is experiencing new things so what better way of doing that than going to upstate NY from Southern Cali haha.

Well, yes, it would be a huge change for you. I went to Syracuse back in the day and it is certainly cold and drab all winter long. You really hardly ever see the sun. It was too much for me and I am from NY. I transferred after 2 years. My advice to you would be to check it out during the winter so you get a real feeling for it and to also consider other schools in the northeast as well. Syracuse is also very rural. There are many schools in NY that would fit your criteria of good business school and communications/advertising. It would be wise to check out all of your options and then if you still feel Syracuse is the right choice, then go for it.

Ahh my hometown of Syracuse. You'll adapt to the winters, and if I recall correctly, a good amount of of the university consists of underground tunnels and connections to keep you from the sometimes -30 wind chills (someone clarify this for me?) Autumn is short, but lovely, and sometimes Spring doesn't come well into late April, but it's not as horrendous as the rest of the world makes it seem. Good kids up at SU, and some great programs. I wish you luck in your cross country endeavors to the 315!

Great stuff Lily and Stewart, I appreciate the insight. I'm definitely going to visit the campus over the winter because the last thing I want is to transfer across the country and find out it is not the right fit for me. To be honest, the cold is not what worries me about Syracuse because I think I could not only handle it but actually enjoy it. My only reservation about going there is the networking possibilities it offers seeing how it is not in a major city. Does anyone know how the internships/career opportunities are for Syracuse students/grads? Does the university have many business connections in NYC? Lily, what other campuses sound like good fits for me? I would love to go to NYU, but I know as a business major it would be quite a reach for me. I've also heard good things about Binghamton regarding its business program. Thanks again guys.

Oz: A couple of things if you get past the weather...

1) There is a dual enrollment opportunity Whitman(business)/Newhouse(advertising/communications)

2) The primary reason why top students attend the above schools (especially Newhouse) are the networking and alumni opportunities....I'm not as versed on WHitman as Newhouse, but it would certainly be productive for you to find out the placement numbers.

4) As an alumni of Binghamton, I can tell you that the business program is primarily strong in accounting....excellent recruiting and placement...

Rodney, thank you so much for the insight. It appeases my biggest qualm with Syracuse knowing networking is a strength of the school. My dream is to work for an advertising firm in NYC so I assume that having great networking/alumni opportunities at Newhouse could be greatly beneficial along that path. I appreciate your offer and definitely won't hesitate to ask for more insight in the future.

All the knowledge you guys have shared has been spectacular, however, I'm still curious what you think my chances for admission are.

I'm going to say you're in. Though it makes me sad lol as I'm applying with a gpa 2.8 from an engineering program hoping to get into a English Literature program at Syracuse. Although I had extenuating circumstances. Good luck to you though. Oh Btw since I might not have a chance to visit can you keep me posted on this thread on what it was like?

Thank you Chris, it means a lot knowing others think I have a good chance at getting in. I think your chances could be pretty decent if you write a good essay about your situation considering Syracuse doesn't seem to be super selective and your GPA isn't nearly as bad as it could be. I'll definitely post a review about my visit. I was thinking about doing it in the college visits section and then posting a link in this thread.
