International student - CC and then transfer or straight to university?

Hi,
I live in Sweden and I wish to study at a university in the States. I've read a lot about people going either ways, but I wonder which option is best suited for me? I've read something that people who attend CC get lower salary, only attend because they aren't as ambitious as others etc.
My grades are between top and average. Later on this year I'm taking the SAT-subject test and I've already taken the TOEFL-test. I also intend to go on a showcase for a possible soccer scholarship (not depending on it too much though).

My aim is to study Engineering or Grapihc Design (haven't decided yet) at a really good university, not exactly Ivy-league, but that has good recognition both national and international (and maybe a good international admission/center as well where I get to meet other internationals), starting fall of 2010.

Thank You for your help!
