Im sure I'm not the only person faced with this so I hope someone can make me feel about about this extremely stressful situation

When I applied to colleges my senior year of HS I did almost all of it myself... I took care of the applications.. getting my parents info for it.. FAFSA.. everything.. I got back my acceptances and unfortunately some denials and I decided on a school that I wanted to attend. Fast forward.. the deposit is due in 3 days... after being led to believe I was heading off to school in just a few short months my parents say

"WHAT?? you thought we could afford this????"

So basically I was told that if I went to CC for 2 years my parents would help me go whereever I wanted. I was crushed, pretty devastated at the time actually but I accepted because I felt like I had no other choice and knew in 2 years I'd try again and it would all work out.

part of me is glad I did because not only did I meet fantastic friends at CC but I also changed my major from Journalism to Marketing Communications & PR which I have been involved with in volunteer work in the entertainment industry in fanbase PR since i was 16. So now it's that time for me to apply to schools and I have my top choice (Columbia College Chicago) because I am absolutely in love with the school and the atmosphere and they have my exact major and i don't hear anything but good things about the program

My parents.. the dear folks that promised me if I'd do 2 years at CC they'd help me.. haha.. they are GONE! Now it's..

"You think we're going to live in a cardboard box so you can go to school?"
"When something happens you think one of us is gonna go out there???"

and blah blah blah blah... Im the first (and probably) only kid they have to go to college and they don't know anything about it.. they are avoiding the subject.. not helping me.. and I do not want to wait until 3 days before **** is due to have them crush my dreams! I've been doing everything all on my own but im getting to that point of looking at loans and stuff and I just want their support which I feel I am entitled to as their child but they just want to avoid the subject in hopes it'll go away. I'm pretty darn confident ill get into columbia (chance topic: Columbia College Chicago) and I just don't know where to go from here.. I have 2 safetys that I plan to finish my supplements and send transcripts to by end of November and I should be hearing from Colum Chicago in 2-4 weeks

Should I start to reseach loans? beg my parents to support me?

My condolences for how your terrible situation has come about. What your parents falsely promised you is two faced and just horrible.

but think of this as your last hurdle to independence. From reading, you have done well on your own in college, but take it to the next level.

A while ago I realized my middle class family won't help me. I'm in serious competition to transfer to an ivy league, and my parents couldnt give a ****. So (if im accepted) I'll have to haul my own stuff to my college which is over a thousand miles away and pay my own way because I want a quality education.

So to answer your question, carve your own path in life: start looking into loans. (and some safeties wouldnt hurt)

Check out in-state public universities. Work all summer long and part-time during the school year to defray expenses. Sorry about those parents of yours.

Assume you will be covering 100% of the costs of your transfer college. Spend as little time as possible grousing about your parents and focus on a plan you can implement on your own. (I'm not saying grieve your lost dreams - but since life is buzzing by quickly and due dates approaching, time to embrace Plan B. And do remember that being angry at your parents is an empty well of lost energy - might as well see them with clear eyes, accept them as is, and move on quickly to live your own life fully.)

The reality is that many parents can't or do not want to pay college tuition for their children. Call it luck of the draw, but your parents don't want to and I doubt any begging or pleading will help the situation.

Best of luck. Time to quickly explore other routes to get your degree.
