Freshman Transfer

Currently I am enrolled as a freshman at a large pretty expensive northeastern school (Boston U, Syracuse type) and while I thought I would love it I am currently not too happy. Money is of course a factor but not the only one, I went to this school while most of my friends went to schools closer to home (Temple University etc.). I am of course going to give this school another month at least to see if it gets better but the kids i hang out with i dont feel as in touch with and it seems i am making more of a concerted effort then others to be friends, but to no avail. I have been to a few parties with these kids and i like them but I just feel as if my old friends are for lack of a better word, better. I am thinking of transferring out of my school and going to a cheaper school closer to home where some of my old friends are, which is Temple. I had an alright high school GPA 3.8 weighted and a 1910 on the SATs which i only took once. I am going to make sure i keep my college grades up because if I transfer I may want to try to go into the honors program at Temple. My question is do you thinking transferring is wise if I continue to dislike my school and would i have any shot at transferring into the honors college at Temple? Thank you for taking your time to read and respond to my post.

I was in the exact same situation as you. I attended BU out of HS, and really had a miserable experience from the getgo. I left after a semester, and took a little time off before transferring back home to Temple, where I'm now a junior. It wasn't a money issue for me, but I felt like at $50K a year, it was a waste of my parents' money. I made a few friends that I liked, but overall, even as someone who is upper class, I felt really uncomfortable at a 'wealthy' school. I drive a really nice car, have nice stuff and all that, but BU was like watching My Super Sweet 16. There were $120K+ cars all over campus, which belonged to students. My dad doesn't drive anything close to a $120K car. I knew people who had private jets, 4th and 5th homes (we have one and a nice condo at the shore--hardly anything close to 5 houses). There are people who are kids of famous entertainers, athletes, politicians, etc. Everyone wore designer stuff all the time and I'm a shorts and tshirt kinda guy. It was basically like watching people compete and try to one-up each other. I knew a kid that had a $4K watch. It was just not what I envisioned, and socially, even though I made a few friends who were normal, the very nature of the general student body made me feel icky.

I can assure you that Temple is nothing remotely like that. It's much better and more confortable being the 'rich' kid here, rather than the 'poorest' kid at a private school who isn't on financial aid. Everyone at Temple is pretty normal. We definitely have our share of kids who are wealthy and like to show off, but that's still pretty rare.

Anyway, as far as Temple Honors goes, Your SAT is slightly below the average for the program. If you're doing well at your current school, I think you definitely have a good shot of transferring into the honors program.

If you have any questions about the school or anything, feel free to send me a private message.

For Temple? No, you'll be fine either way. I didn't transfer after the year.
