Are there any returning students that have gotten their financial aid packages yet? WHen my DS logs on to his application info it says that his application is complete and an award will be made when his group is awarded. It also says returning students are awarded by mid summer.

The wait is killing me. Plus, I'm hesitant to have him notify Tulane about his outside scholarship until an initial award is made. If there are any students who are going into their Junior year, do you remember when you got your award last year?

If the outside scholarship is made out to your s and to Tulane (as many are) you will have to notify them. I can understand you want to know what they would give you for FA if you didnt have another scholarship, but if they are likely going to have to adjust it anyway, you might want to give them time to do so and get the correct numbers on your tuition bill. I've found that they can be a little slow in doing that, and then you are up against a deadline of waiting until a bill is correct vs getting hit with a late fee if you dont pay the bill as it currently stands for that month.

August..... OMG I guess we better notify them about outside awards now.

It was just nice last year to find out what his original FA package looked like. He received three outside scholarships ((K total) after FA notification last year and we were able to see how it affected his package. The first 5500 went towards unmet need I guess, and since they use the profile it was nice to see what they felt our institutional EFC was. THe next 3500 eliminated loans. This year his 6K scholarship has been renewed and we are still waiting on a 1K scholarship from his employer which we are pretty sure he will get (the flyers say everyone should apply because they have tons of scholarships -really).

I'm just worried that if he notifies them of his 6K now they may reduce a possible institutional grant instead of loans and unmet need.

Just a quick update in case this question ever comes up for anyone in the future. My son called Tulane on the 6th and they said financial aid packages for returning students should be sent out within two weeks.

My son asked if he should send the info about additional outside scholarships (yes that was plural - he's now up to 10K, and still waiting on his employer's scholarship!!! More money than last year.....) THe financial aid couselor told him to notify them of outside scholarships AFTER he gets his initial package.
