Fall 2013 transfers: are you also applying to privates?

I have been posting questions in the general transfer forum but unfortunately nobody has responded to any. I am interested in applying to privates but I'm afraid my shaky academic history will not be looked at as holistically as the UCs would. However, I am still trying to do research to figure out if I would have a chance at any privates, and if so, which ones.

So is anybody else here thinking about applying to privates in lieu of UC apps? Which ones?

I'm thinking of USC, NYU, Georgetown, Rutgers, Columbia, and Cornell. By the end of the fall semester I will have close to 100 semester units (I don't know if that means an automatic rejection for privates) with a 3.4 GPA. I am a philosophy major with 12 philosophy classes completed, including 3 upper division. I have also attended 9 schools and extenuating circumstances made me drop/stop attending classes (I'll be getting academic renewal) 3 semesters in a row. But after that hardship, I will have a year of a strong upward grade trend. I also have a unique and interesting life story. I am hoping I will have more options than just UCs because I feel none of the UCs are a perfect fit for me.

What about you?

I'm pretty sure that USC does not accept academic renewal. I'm pretty sure they will count all of your grades.

I was looking into privates for a while too but the more I looked into them the more I saw that many of them would only consider transfers that would have been possible for admittance coming out of HS. I didn't even finish HS so that put an end to that. So basically I'm recommending you taking a real detailed look at your schools of interest transfer guidelines.

Also for USC you can actually see which of your classes will transfer.

^^i didn't finish high school either, and the sense I got from some privates is that they only really care about your high school stats of you are applying as a 2nd semester freshman or sophomore. Some of the schools I looked at didnt require scores if you had completed a certain amount of college. Did you take CHSPE or GED? They are legally equivalent to a he diploma so you would still be able to apply.

It really depends on the private you look at, if youre looking at prestigious universities then they have to look at high school to differentiate between the overqualified applicants.

To my knowledge, NYU has never been transfer friendly.

I am transferring in Fall 2012. I'll be honest with everyone, applying to privates/out of states was a waste of my time/money.

I applied to 3 UC's, and 4 privates/O.o.S.

I got rejected from 2 UCs and got into all the other schools. It was awful because the privates were schools I was extremely interested in, were just unbelievably expensive. I qualify for financial aid, yet at these other schools I was told I would need still 30-40K in loans.

My advice is not to apply to schools you can't afford, unless you know you'll get a full ride or come from a family who can help you out a lot.

What privates did you apply to? What was your GPA and how many units did you have? Money is kind of an issue but not that much, I work full time and already have a moderate savings account and I'll be working full time in the fall and double full time in the spring so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to pay for at least one year upfront, and I would work full time while there so if I were to take out loans, it would just be for part of tuition. I would definitely work enough while there to pay for rent, books, and food.

But even if my loan was only for $10-15,000, I would only do it for a school I really wanted to go to: schools in NYC, Cornell, Georgetown, Rutgers.

Wow, I thought coming out of CCCs to privates was undoable in modt situations... It seems weird to me that you were only accepted to one Uc then, what were your stats & schools? It would definitely amelorate this conversation.

I just went to an information session at Georgetown. I'm interning in DC for the summer so I thought it would be a great opportunity to get sometransfer info. I called, they asked if I was applying as a freshman and I said no. As a transfer. The session was completely tailored for undergraduates who attended that information session. I thought it was kind of mean that they didn't even talk about transfer requirements. But it just goes to show how they mainly want freshman. I'm still applying because Georgetown is absolutely beautiful.. but I'll also be applying for the UCs because of the cost of attendance at Georgetown ($60k/year)
