Hello College Confidential! I just transferred to CAL in May and I remember what I went through during the application process. If you have ANY questions or if you would like me to attempt to chance you then I will most definitely help you! Also, I can read your personal statements and give you some advice! Good luck! :)

    Awesome!

What is your major? Why did you choose cal? How do you like the professors and student body? What advice would you give for personal statements? What were your stats when applying i.e. gpa, pre-req's completed etc.?

Hey, thanks for doing this. Can you please chance me?

    Computer Science major
    GPA: 3.15
EC's: Held officer positions in Computer Science and Engineering clubs. Also got a software engineering internship for next summer
Applied to: Santa Cruz (signed a TAG with them), Davis, San Diego, Irvine, a few CSU's

I understand that I have almost no shot at any of these schools, but I REALLY want to go Davis. That's my #1 choice. Any chance I might get in there?

You transferred in May or you were accepted in May and enrolled this semester? I thought Berkeley's spring semester started in January?

@Yupper: Hey Yupper! My major is Sociology &nd I choose CAL for several reasons. CAL is extremely diverse, which I love. I also chose CAL because they are on a semester system vs. quarter. Sociology @ CAL is #1 in the country and it is taught by the most amazing and top notch professors. Another factor that played a huge role in my decision is the fact that my mom just finished her cancer treatments and I wanted to stay as close as possible (I live 35-40 minutes away from campus; but I do not commute). I come home on the weekends which is nice! My number #1 advice for your personal statement is to be yourself. Expressing who you are is what they are looking for. Also, making your personal statement clear, concise and straight to the point. I know that the admissions office does not like to read any fluff. Imagine how many PS they go through! My personal statement was 604 words altogether (2 essays) and it was pretty strong. My statistics when I applied were (I got this from an old thread I posted a year ago):
    "SOCIOLOGY/PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR

I am so nervous for April! Please take the time to chance me! :]

    CC ----> UC
    GPA: 3.70
Schools/Majors: UCB (Soc.), UCLA (Psych.), UCSD (Soc. TAG), UCD (Psych.)
I have received 3 W's &4 D's (Retook all of them and got A's). A high upward trend from first semester until now.
Completed IGETC & PRE-REQS for all schools that I applied for.

    EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:
    --Volunteer @ Hospital (2 years)
    --Outdoor Education Camp (2 years)
--Community Service @ Church (4+ years)
--Clothing store (2 years), and have worked for restaurants and other places as well...started working at the age of fifteen. Also, I currently baby-sit a family of 2 kids.
    --Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society
    --Psi Beta Psychology
    --Scholarship from college
    --Student Government (Senator) (1 year)
--Tennis Team for college (1 year)
--Secretary for club on campus (1 year)
    --Psychology Club (3 years)
    --Traditional Cultural Dancing (5-6+ years)

Essays were straight to the point and very personal. Not sure what I would rate them..."

I ended up getting accepted to all except for UCLA. I called up UCLA and they told me I took the wrong biology! Make sure you have completed IGETC/PRE-REEQS (ASSIST.ORG). Yuppers, if you have any more questions let me know! :)

@Physloop24: Hey Physloop24! First and foremost I want to start by saying that "chancing" will give you a rough estimate on what to expect for when admissions roll around. I know many people got rejected last year with 4.0's and many got accepted with 3.7's in other majors like the social sciences. Because computer science is a tougher subject, many of the GPA's that people apply with in general are not as high as letter's & science majors. So by saying this, let's begin! Because you TAGged with Santa Cruz, your chances there are looking extremely good. Follow the TAG rules and you are set. As for Davis, you have a 55-70% chance. If you can raise your GPA to a 3.2 by the end of the fall semester you will be solid! If you raise your GPA this semester you will have a 75%+chance of getting in! This goes for Irvine as well. San Diego on the other hand is super competitive for the major you are applying with. You have a long shot, but promise me you won't give up! Honestly, many of these schools are looking for 1]. GPA 2]. Completion of IGETC/PRE-REQS
3]. Extra-curricular activities/Personal statement. It seems like your extra-curriculars are good. To make you a stronger candidate, I always tell people to join their "associated students" (student government) in college. It gives them a sense of leadership! Have you finished IGETC and your PRE-REQS? &nd, how is your personal statement coming along? Keep up with the hard work and do well this semester and you should be okay! :)

@Dilapidatedmind: Hey Dilapidatedmind! I got accepted on April 27th 2012 for Fall of 2012. I started classes in May (Transfer Edge). &nd I will be graduating this upcoming May of 2013! Let me know if you have any questions! :)

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Thank you for the extremely detailed feedback! I really appreciate it. Sorry I wasn't more thorough with my last post. IGETC isn't required for my major, but I've completed most of the classes anyway since I was once a Psychology major. I have only two classes left to complete IGETC, but I won't do it since I have a few other pre-reqs to finish. As for pre-reqs, they will be 100% completed by the end of spring 2013.

My personal statement is pretty good. I had a few friends proof-read a rough draft, and they were extremely impressed. I'm going to continue working on it, and do as well as I possibly can in my classes!

Hey PsychBruin, I'm a little different than most people because I'm only at this community college for two semesters (including this one) before I transfer so I'm filling out the App now.

I've seen people say that I have a 0% chance if I dont have both writing and one math class by now but is that true in my case? they cant expect that when I have had only 1 semester as college student (I took two classes senior year that I didn't have the time for and one two over the summer which is why my gpa is not a 4.0)

I will have a 3.307 by the end of this semester, IGETC will be done by spring, I have literally every class that assist says for irvine valley college and UCI in a Criminology major by the end of spring. An AA in criminology. (only pre-req idk is psych 1 and thats because i get psych 1 credit from my CC through a 5 in the psych ap test but uci gives elective units for it but it wouldnt make sense if I retook psych 1 for 0 credit right? its too much money)
most likely I will apply only to UCI
    Extra curriculars are
    Eagle Scout
    Criminal Justice Academy
    Ap Scholar with Honors
(i dont have many ive only been in college for less than a semester!)

Major: Applied Mathematics - mathematical biology emphasis (UCB), Molecular, Cell, Developmental Biology (UCLA)
    Applying to: UCB, UCLA
    Applying from: UCSD
    Overall GPA: 3.84
    Major GPA (for both): 4.00

    EC's:
-LOADS of tutoring: job as a paid math tutor (Introductory Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Vector Calculus); some unpaid Math/Biology/General Chemistry tutoring
-Tutor in various subjects (math, biology, chemistry, history) for underprivileged middle school/high school students for a college program called Reality Changers.
-Paid internship at a Bioinformatics/Chemoinformatics company since May, very relevant to both the fields of Applied Mathematics and of Developmental Biology
-Currently doing a Sophomore Honors research project on the neurobiology of fruit flies and the effectiveness of male fly pheromone in the absence of all other sensory stimuli.
-Active member of Habitat for Humanity. Nearly 100 hours of community service completed.
-Active member of AMSA, pre-med club. 30-40 Hours of community service completed.

    Pre-req's:
-All Lower Division GE's will be complete by spring, satisfying the UC Reciprocity agreement.
-ALL UCB major pre-req's will be done by spring, and most UCLA major req's will be done by spring

    Essays:
Major Essay: Will talk about how I intend to do an Applied Mathematics/Molecular Biology double major at whichever school I get into. This is my way of reconciling my passions for both qualitative and quantitative sciences. Will mostly reference my paid internship due to its relevance to both majors, and maybe even my research project, although it only started a month ago.
Quality/Experience Essay: Will talk about how tutoring with Reality Changers has made me a better person/given me a new outlook on things. Being able to teach people in positions not as fortunate as myself about some of the things I am really passionate about has been to me one of the most rewarding experiences of my college experience thus far.

Pros: My GPA is good in my opinion, and I feel that my extra curriculars are solid, relevant to my majors, and display quite clearly what I am passionate in.
    Cons: UC-to-UC transfers suck.

    Chances/advice on anything application related?

    psych,

First off, congrats! I know how important the essay/ps is for Cal. When you wrote yours, how did you proofread/review it? Did anyone at Cal read it prior to you submitting it? Or did you just write it, proofread it yourself and submit it? Thank you.
  • XianForceXianForce Posts: 47Registered User Junior Member
    @rickeyseg
They are right. The writing requirement is a UC requirement overall. So without it you have a 0% chance at getting into any UC.

But math and writing are PART of IGETC, so there is no way that you have completed IGETC without math and writing.

So if you actually have completed IGETC and your core preqs, I would say that you have a decent shot.
  • rickysegrickyseg Posts: 427Registered User Member
I am not saying it will not be done but I only have the one math class in progress and writing 1 completed.
I am taking wr 2 in the SPRING. HERE IS THE CATCH THOUGH----> I just graduated from highschool, I am in my first semester here and there would be no way someone would have both writing classes before spring so in this case does that mean I am ok????
Reposting my info with correction thanks for that xian i forgot to mention that the only one im missing is one writing class (writing 2)

As long as you complete all the requirements by the Spring before transfer, you should be okay.
