I'm a computer science major, applying to a bunch of UC's and CSU's. Submitted a TAG to UCSC, but still waiting for a decision. In Spring 2013, General Chemistry 2 and Assembly Language Programming have conflicting times. My school has only ONE Assembly class, but multiple Chem classes which ALL conflict with Assembly!

I'm not sure what to do. It seems like I can take only one class. All the other community colleges are too far away so I'm not gonna drive there.

Are any of them part of sequences? In other words, when you register for classes next fall, which one is the more important prereq and which one can wait? Which one has a tougher curve at the UC/CSU? Are any of them offered during the summer (either at a ccc or at a 4 year) that you could take so both will be done by fall?

Have you looked at online classes for other colleges?

Or talk to ur advisor and they might let you do both even it's conflicting (I'm just guessing :P)

Chemistry is part of a sequence. If I were going to a 4 year university, and I had to register for fall classes, I think having the assembly language knowledge will be far more beneficial than chemistry. Chemistry is just something I need to take to get my degree, but assembly might actually be required for more advanced CS classes.

Which has a tougher curve at UC/CSU? Definitely Chemistry. It's a lower division class for all the pre-med kids, so professors want to weed everyone out. I'm obviously not a pre-med so I couldn't care less about this class.

Chemistry is offered during the summer, but its infinitely harder then.

Then take assembly now and take chemistry in the summer or fall and take it P/NP so the harsh curve won't hurt your GPA and you can focus on your CS classes.

I like that strategy. However, UCSC (which I sent a TAG to), and UCD (where I want to go), both *recommend* finishing the General Chemistry sequence before transferring. If I don't, would that severely hurt my chances of getting accepted?

Sigh, alright. So I found one community college that's reasonably close where I can take Assembly. Taking it there will allow me to take Chemistry 2 and Discrete Math at my current college.

The Assembly class is outside of my current district, but the class still transfers over to UC's/CSU's. It shouldn't be a problem if I take it there, right?

That'll be fine. But you should apply and register ASAP because that process can sometimes take awhile for new students.

Yeah, it turns out I have to fill out and send some applications so I don't have to retake math/english assessments tests, and a whole bunch of other stuff. This, on top of class work and personal essays, is freaking crazy.

I had to the do the same thing a few times when I wanted to take a few online classes at different places. Just sign up online which only takes a few minutes. After that, once you get your email stating you are a new fully registered student, call the registrars office and ask if you can just fax the info they need in. I have never been told no. Then either later that day, or in a day or two everything is all updated and I was able to sign up the classes I wanted. Not a big hassle at all really.

Make sure that it articulates to the required courses at the UCs and CSUs as listed on Welcome to ASSIST .

Do you need to take chemistry at all?

UCSC BA CS does not list chemistry in the articulation sheet.
UCSC BS CS lists the option of a chemistry sequence or a physics sequence.
UCD BS CS lists the option of a chemistry sequence or a physics sequence.
UCD BS CS&E lists a required physics sequence plus one quarter of chemistry.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I do need to take Chemistry. For UCSC, I'm pursuing the BS. For all the other schools, I chose the 2 semester Chemistry sequence.

It turns out I was wrong, and no matter how I tweak the schedule, Chemistry and Assembly ALWAYS conflict. It's frustrating how in my district there's 10+ sections of Chemistry, and they all manage to overlap with the ONE Assembly class. It doesn't look like I can take both, and I'm leaning towards taking Assembly.

If I don't finish the Chemistry sequence at a CCC, is it a guaranteed rejection from UC/CSU schools?

No it's not an automatic rejection, one prereq rarely is unless it says required on assist.org. From what ucbalumnus posted, it looks like if you transfer without that chemistry course you'll be fine for admission at UCSC and UCD for CS, except for UCD's CS major through their engineering department. You'd still be okay to apply to their College of L&S for CS.
