Tricky situation; class cuts, and what to take!

Hey guys,

First of all, I'm a computer science major looking to transfer next year to Riverside, Irvine, Santa Barbara and Davis. My top choice would definitely be Irvine or Santa Barbara. I'm also looking into a couple CSUs. My GPA is a 3.2.

Anyway, in the spring I'll be taking 3 pre-requisite classes as stated on assist.org. However, that's only 12 units and I was planning on taking 16 units. The last class I was planning on taking has been cut, so now I'm left with the following lingering question:

Since the class has been cut, should I take a '********' class in order to get an easy A and thus boost up my GPA? Would it count even if it's not on the list of classes in assist.org for my intended major? Or should I just take the 3 classes I have planned (as part of the pre-reqs) and not worry about that 4th?

Basically, I want to know if taking another class not related to my major will help boost my GPA assuming by the end of the spring I get a 4.0 GPA

I'm pretty sure the UC's do not look at your Spring grades unless you are taking some major pre-req and in that case they just want to make sure you took it and passed it(ex. maybe a UC requires a 2.75 in all major pre-reqs). They'll have their acceptance/rejection decision sent out before spring semester even ends.

Sorry, I should've made that part a bit more clear. I'm not planning on transferring until next year, meaning I still have 3 semesters to go.

Take a general ed class. If you have finished IGETC (I know it's not required for CS majors, but it would only help you to try to do it too), then just stick with the 12 units or take an additional class that is something that you *really* want to take, not just something that is an easy A.

Have you completed your English classes yet? Those are most important.

I've completed everything, but I don't want to take something like History of Rock because it wouldn't even be a part of the GPA :\

If you've completed finished IGETC then don't take anything. 12 units is fine.

If the class is UC transferable it will be part of you cumulative GPA.

Right, I can take that route, but I want to raise my GPA. So, taking an extra class that would be transferable would help raise my GPA even if it's not part of the CS pre-reqs, correct?

Correct. I'm signing up for a history of The Beatles course. Which has absolutely nothing to do with with my major prereqs. I just really like The Beatles and it's a UC transferable class and it will be a GPA booster.

Of course it will raise your GPA.

Question: how have you calculated your GPA so far? Did you include all of your IGETC classes into your GPA too?

Yes, everything. I've only taken 3 classes as part of my pre-reqs with all A's.

My highest possible GPA would be a 3.39.

Edit: How would that look anyway? A 3.3 overall, with a 4.0 in major-related courses only (pre-reqs)?

If you currently have a 3.2, and you are applying to transfer next fall, then how is it possible that your highest possible GPA is a 3.39? You have spring semester, summer, and fall to bring it up. Do you currently have 80+ units already?

Yup, changed from a History major to a CS major right before I was about to transfer a year ago, then decided to finish all of my CS pre-reqs.

wow. that sucks. I think a 3.3 with a 4.0 major gpa would be fine at most schools considering that you will have a strong upward grade trend, but then again I don't know how impacted CS is. Good luck!
