Do I not qualify for UCD Bio TAG?

ucbtransfer98ucbtransfer98 Registered User Posts: 7 New Member
In the 2018 Davis TAG PDF, it states that for Biological Sciences 2A/B/C...
"Students must have a GPA of at least 2.50 for this group of courses. Students must
have already achieved the minimum required GPA in the course(s) that have been
completed before submitting the UC TAG Application, e.g. if one course from the
group is completed at the time of TAG, that course must be completed with a B
minus (B-) grade or better."

Does that mean I needed to take a general biology course before submitting my TAG? I am using my AP Calc AB score to exemplify myself from one of the math requirements and have taken the first 2 quarters of general chemistry (B+, A). I plan on taking the general biology sequence starting fall 2017 and have met all the other TAG requirements.

    check with UCI admissions or the xfer center at your CC if the online material is not clear. If someone out here gives you an answer and is wrong, you are the one bearing the brunt.

    It means that you need to have the equivalent of UC Davis's Bio Science courses 2A/2B and 2C completed with a 2.5 GPA prior to transferring (end of Spring quarter/semester) or when you apply for TAG you must have at least one course in the series completed with a B- or better.
    According to you, you will not start your Bio classes until Fall 2017, but to meet TAG requirements you need to have one course completed with grades by September 2017, so do not meet TAG requirements and it is strongly recommended to have the series completed prior to submitting TAG.

    You can still apply without TAG.

    ^^^ I'm not sure this is right. The only courses I can see they *require* you to take prior to submitting the tag in Fall 2017 are the math and english. That snippet, to me at least, says that if you have gone on to take some of the classes required to be completed by when you enroll at Davis there is a gpa requirement that must be met. I don't see anything in the links i looked at that says you must have Bio classes taken prior to sending in the TAG.

    So potentially you could have taken none of the classes and still file, but then you'd need to complete all the required classes your last year at your CC and meet the gpa requirement or else when they get your final transcript they will revoke your acceptance. The way I read it, anyway. Check with Davis if this is important to you.

    @badgolfer:

    This is copied off the UC TAG website for Biological Sciences:

    To qualify for a fall 2018 Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) in these majors, you must complete the requirements stated above with the following variances:

    -Complete UC transfer requirements in the areas of English composition (2 courses) and mathematics (1 course) by the end of fall term 2017.
    -Meet or exceed the minimum overall GPA of 3.20 from the time your TAG is submitted, up to the time of enrollment.
    -Have already achieved the minimum required GPAs in the course(s) from the groups above that have been completed before submitting the UC TAG Application, e.g. if one course from the mathematics, chemistry or biological sciences groups is completed at the time of TAG, that course must be completed with a B minus (B–) grade or higher.
    :::::::::::::::::::::::::

    To me this means the OP needs one Biology course with a B- or higher to meet TAG requirements upon submission.

    Thanks for the clarification. This confirms my initial belief that I don't qualify for UCD TAG since I haven't taken any of my general bio courses yet. I plan on meeting up with a TAG counselor later this month to discuss about the requirement. For now, I'll use my TAG for UCSB.

    @Gumbymom I'm not really sure of my answer but...
    Have already achieved the minimum required GPAs in the course(s) from the groups above that have been completed before submitting the UC TAG Application, e.g. if one course from the mathematics, chemistry or biological sciences groups is completed at the time of TAG, that course must be completed with a B minus (B–) grade or higher
    One way of reading this is that for all the classes in these groups that you have completed the average must be B-. The crucial text (and I'm not a lawyer) is "have been completed".

    My interpretation is that if you have taken any then you must have a B- average. But "have been completed" is also compatible with zero having been completed.

    I'm not sure on this. If I was the OP I'd call or email Davis to ask. If you do so, let us know what they say.

    @badgolfer, I agree that OP should contact UCD for the ultimate final word on what is required, but i am also using common sense in that if you are applying as a Biology major for TAG that you should at least have one Biology course grade under your belt prior to application time..

    To me it clearly says you need a 2.5 GPA in the courses you have completed in that series when apply for TAG and you must maintain a cumulative 2.5 when you take the remaining.

    In other words, if you have completed:

    --Only Bio 2A you need 2.5 in that course at time of TAG and cumulative for all 3 by spring must be 2.5.

    --If you completed 2A and 2B you need a cumulative 2.5 at time of TAG and maintain that cumulative through all three.

    --Completing all 3 you need a cumulative 2.5.

    Now having said that, I could be 100% wrong. You need to ask UCD.

    With regard to whether Bio 2A needs to be done prior to TAG, the phrasing is "if" one of these courses is completed it needs to be 2.5. That, to me, does not equate to a required course to TAG.

    It's fun to parse out the UC meaning but obviously OP can't rely on our analysis and needs to definitely contact UCD TAG.

    @badgolfer
    This is what UCD emailed me. "For Biological Sciences majors you must complete the whole general biology course with a total GPA of 2.50 by the end of Spring 2018. However, you must take at least one biology course before submission of the TAG and have met the minimum GPA requirement to be eligible."

    Glad you got the course requirements clarified. You can always apply as a regular transfer applicant.

    Good to know. They might want to clarify the wording.
