Seems like you have a good shot. The hispanic hook will help you, as well. Are you applying for next fall?

@Torrancecali

I know they have preference over in-state, but do you think I'm competitive enough with the out-of-states?

they can't accept 100% from instate either

Haas accepts 8 percent of transfer applicants. 7% will most likely be instate.

http://students.berkeley.edu/files/A...ransfer_07.pdf go there for more transfer information, specifically page 5.

Also, it appears that you might not know about this, so i will go ahead and say it-- the UCs dont consider race. In the late 90's california passed a proposition (209, i think) that eliminates race from ever being considered in the admissions procedures. With that in mind, the admission counselors never see what race you are, they dont see your first and last name, all they see is your ID number, so decisions will never be based on your race. It is strictly gpa for transfer (and maybe, just maybe, a little consideration on the essay part, but dont count on it since the UCs get 10,000 applications)

For out of state residents, 340 applied for all the schools in berkeley (i.e. haas, the college of letters and science, etc) and only 32 got in (a 9% average). For more info, go here http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/transfer.asp

So your chances are the same as anyone attempting to transfer to harvard...

@mojojojo69

I didn't know about the race issue.

Regarding % of acceptance they have something different in their website.

2006-2007 Transfer Stats:

1136 -- Applications Received
340 -- Eligible Applicants (796 applicants did not show planned completion of the admission requirements and were considered ineligible. Of the 340 eligible applicants, 90 were offered admission.) -- so if I have ALL their pre-requisites completed when I apply I will fall down in the 340 eligible not the 1136 who applied.
90 -- Offers of Admission

90/340 = 26.47%

Source: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergr...stransfer.html

It doesn't specify the % which are in-state/out-state but it's way more than 8%.

I don't know how much of this is true, but I saw that someone said that Berkeley looks for people or considers people "who have overcome hardships".. I have a couple of things that I could write about in this category...

1) Horrible divorce from parents when I was 12
2) Father was unjustly put in jail for 1 year while he was being prosecuted for things he never did, he was found not-guilty but he had to be in jail for a year while the trial took place (Jails in El Salvador are wayyy different than here in the US, you can only imagine)
3) Overcame alcohol/chemical abuse, was in rehab for 8 months, and I've been clean for 2 years now.

pchristiani, you see, those numbers are just everyone who applied to Haas; with that in mind, if 340 out of state residents applied, haas would not be their first choice since its the hardest to get into, and not to mention that not everyone is a business major. So i would guess that out of those 340, maybe around 20 or so are out of state, and perhaps around 3-5 of those got in.

If you are going to write a hardship essay, i would not recommend writing an essay like "oh look at me, i suffered alot". America loves coming-of-age stories, so thats what i would recommend; or somehow tie it in with the hardship.
