Help! How do people have a 'backup' plan?

First let me give a bit of background... I'm at Santa Monica College, on a track to apply for transfer to Haas at Berkeley this coming November.

As many of you know, Haas has significantly different prerequisites and transfer requirements that most other majors / schools and even IGETC. Thus, my preparatory coursework to this point has very Haas-specific.

Obviously Haas is very competitive and thus I want to apply to 'backup' schools. For this case, let's say UCLA. Since my coursework at this point has been so specific to Haas, how can I possibly apply to other majors at other campuses? I'd absolutely love to study Cognitive Science at UCLA, for example, but there are several prerequisites for that specific major that I haven't completed, and won't complete before I apply.

So, how does everyone apply to multiple campuses / majors and still satisfy the prerequisites for each? Is there any amount of 'flexibility' in the admissions process for transfers? or is it a rigid, standardized process (due to the volume of applicants to UC's)?

I'm having a bit of an adademic crisis right now and I'd really appreciate the help of the collective intelligence here at CC. Thanks!

It may be very difficult to have a back up major along with a back up school. You might have to just stay within the Business and economic majors you might have to complete a couple other classes to complete IGETC but you should have most of your major preq's done for the econ and business for every school you apply to. It would be probably very difficult to have a back up major. There is some flexibility when it comes to non impacted majors at most the UC's except UCLA and CAL but not that much flexibility so try to stay within your major.

Hey, best of luck to you getting into Haas.

I would suggest applying to other campuses, maybe as an econ major as well.
I wonder if Berkeley would make an exception since you are Haas focused, if you don't get in, they will admit you into Letters and Science...you may give them a call and ask...or explain in your transfer application.

If you don't get into any, which I think is unlikely, perhaps you can stay an extra year at Santa Monica College and complete the IGETC requirements.

It took me 5 years to graduate anyway...the extra year ain't going to kill you.
