CCSF Students

Just curious, anyone here going to CCSF (City College of San Francisco) at the moment and transferring to Berkeley? I know it's too late to share tips, but I thought I'd see what you think you chances are and if the counselors were of any help...I didn't think they were helpful.

I don't go to CCSF, but I think that most CC counselors aren't very helpful. Hell, my counselor would just go www.assist.org and tell me the major requirements

Hey i go to ccsf and no the counsuler are not helpful at all.I would say to the point that they don't know what their talking about.I will be staying extra year due to their knowledge of classes i need to take.

I'm at CCSF. The transfer counselor I saw to confirm that I was on track with IGETC was the only counselor who said that I should go for Cal, all the other counselors seemed to think SF State was the only option for me, even though I have a high gpa. I felt like they were like, "oh, well, State is good enough, so why not only State?" I wonder how many bright students pass up applying for UC because the counselors make them feel as though CSU is the only option?

One BIG complaint: UC doesn't require English 1C (was 40) anymore, 1B is enough. However, no one could tell me exactly what the requirement was. Non-transfer counselors said "no, you don't need it," the English dept said "yes, you do," and the transfer counselors said "take it just in case." While I am happy that I finished 1C since I did learn a lot about writing rhetorically, I could have spent the time taking another major pre-req instead.

Thatgirltoo- i know what you mean when i meet with a counselor in the new student department.Well the first counselor kept telling me to plan for SF state when i kept telling her i want to go to a UC. The second one yelled at me and told me to plan for sf state.

Off topic but I was looking at my education plan that the counselor made and he planned classes i didnt need to take and didnt plan any of my pre-reqs. Anyways question for any ccsf student.How bad is taking a math class during the summer. Also how bad would taking stats and trig at the sametime. because the counselor planned for me to take an extra year but during that extra year i would only have 1 classes planned.So it is worth taking 18 units atleast to transfer a year sooner?

its a good idea to take 1c if you want to transfer to a UC. Completion of IGETC may let you go straight to upper division english if your major requires it and may get rid of foreign language requirement if you took some in high school (depending on the UC). Also, taking 1c is important in preparing us for writing in upper division courses. Just 1a and 1b wont prepare you too much.

I go to CCSF. Counselors here suck. I never listen to them and never ever trust their words. Do research on your own. It's better

and u should take 1C. 1C is VERY important

I like CCSF tho. It's just so close to my place lol

the new building...i wanna use it but i never been in Wellness thing. I wanna see

have u guys been in there? or maybe taking class there

I had the same problem. They were very discouraging. I said I wanted to apply to Cal and they basically ignored me in a "fat chance" way. That was with two counselors. Before I was even able to mention what qualities I have, work experience, ec's and etc. the subject had already been changed. I have taken some classes that were not needed as well. I didn't know that about 1 C. Glad to hear I am not the only one getting this kind of feedback and decided to try anyway.

For the person with a question about stats, I don't know what your major is, but I took Statistics for behavioral sciences online, if this was offered in the summer and it transferrs for your major, I would suggest taking it. It was very easy to learn in this class - not as bad as I expected it.

I would agree that 1C is important for students who need help with writing skills, but it is no longer required for L&S, which is new as of this year, I believe. I would probably check with a UC advisor regarding their thoughts on it, before deciding not to take it.

I really like the new Mission campus building, it is very clean and comfortable. I'm taking one class there right now, and it is so much easier to get to than Ocean. But I'm also taking one class at Berkeley City College, which is about 1 year older, and it seems a lot more modern. The classroom at BCC has a built-in projector, built-in computer, and wireless access. At CCSF Mission, the brand new classroom has none of this, and my teacher discovered that he hasto bring his own extension cord to plug in the projector.

Personally, I think that if someone meets the minimum GPA requirements, they should apply for all the schools that they want to apply for. The counselors should be encouraging everyone to reach for the stars, no?

i would suggest only taking one math class in the summer. Stats in the summer meets for 2 hrs and 15 mins a day. If you take another 3 unit class with stats, that would amount to about 4 hrs n 15 mins a day of math...just take your time..there usually are better/easier teachers in the fall also
