Retaking a Class

So last semester I got a D in my History class which is not a pre-req for my major.I plan to retake the class and do better.Make some stupid mistakes my first semester and became very sick for 2 weeks with a 104 fever so i didnt study for the final.Anyways if i retake the class and get an A would the UCs consider it a C or an A. A counselor told me the UC would see both grades which i understand but when factoring my gpa it would be considered a C only.
Anyone can shed any light on this?

I think they would just factor in the D and whatever grade you get when you retake it into your GPA. So I guess in theory it would be a C because A=4 points and D=1 and 5/2 is 2.5. I talked to a counselor about this a while back and this is what she told me but I'm not positive.

I think if you retake the class and get an A that will bode well for you regardless of what it does to your GPA because it shows that you went back and fixed your mistake. Good luck with whatever you do though!

From the UC Pathways website:

From the UC Pathways website:

How does UC calculate the GPA with repeated courses?

For transfer applicants, only the most recent grade is counted when calculating the GPA; degree credit for the course is given only once. Repetition of a course with an original grade of C or better is disregarded; the original grade is counted when calculating the GPA.
