Getting Ahead in Credits!

So I plan to attend De Anza (Bay Area CC, supposed to be really good) this fall, since I got rejected from most of my schools. I've written a thread on how I wanted to try to transfer in 1.5 years-- dunno how that will go.

But, I will be traveling this summer (June 18th - July 18th) and will not be able to attend any summer classes! Are there any online classes that can get me ahead in credits for CC? Independent study or anything? And how do I know if those courses/credits count for my CC? Thanks.

Do a course search on the "California Virtual Campus." It's a conglomeration of online course listings for various California campuses, and you can do a search for just community colleges. You might also just check out Santa Monica College Online directly, they have a lot of good courses.

As far as applicability, you'll be looking for courses that satisfy either IGETC or major pre-reqs. Say you take a course from SMC that satisfies Area 2 of IGETC. You can transfer that course to any other CCC and it will satisfy Area 2 of IGETC. It's less complicated for major pre-reqs, just use assist to find what online courses will satisfy the requirements.

Hope this helps,
Joe

Edit: PS: Check out De Anza's catalog, they might have good online courses as well.

If you are planning on transferring to a UC school you will not be able to transfer in 1.5 years as they do not take winter or spring admits. But if you are planning on transferring to a CSU or some privates you can just look at there class schedule for distance education courses at really any CC. But keep in mind a lot of classes require you to show up to school on the first day. (attend the first lecture).

Enjoy your summer!

You're going to have to check with a counselor at your CC. Check with a couple of them, because you might get the wrong information. Personally, I think most CC counselors are incompetent. Just check with them for IGETC certification issues, and pre-req equivalnce (ie. calculus I -> calculus II). Otherwise, you don't really need to as long as it transfers to your UC. Double check with ASSIST.

That is not true. Some UCs accept transfers for the winter/spring quarter depending on major. For example, UCLA Engineering accepts transfer for the winter quarter.

For some reason the UC's main website does not list available majors for winter/spring admissions for each campus, or at least I can't find it at this moment. Anyway, here are some examples:

1.

Winter Quarter 2009 application deadline: Thursday, July 31, 2008

# Spring Quarter (March - June)
UCLA is not open to new applicants for the spring quarter.

3. UCD Winter Quarter admissions is open only to students with pre-approved, signed Transfer Admission Guarantees (TAGs).

4. etc.

As long as you meet the requirements, and your major is open for admission, you will be able to transfer.
