What do I do about my friends denial?

A buddy of mine was denied admissions to UCLA. He has a 4.0 GPA and is a political science major. He also has a high ranking position on a student representation organization. He also had a TAP agreement. I think something messed up with admissions. What can we do? He doesn't know I am trying to do research on this. He is one of my best friends and I want do try and figure out what happened. Is there anyway we can check if something didn't go through? Would an admissions officer be able to clear things up? I mean... he is a 4.0 student. What more do they want? He is missing some of the pre-reqs. Big deal. He could finish the rest over summer at their university.

My school doesn't offer a lot of the pre-reqs. Are you guys 100% sure that if you miss one pre-req for UCLA it is an automatic denial? That is stupid. He is missing 4 pre-reqs. One of the pre-reqs is a course that if you talk to the department once admitted, they give you credit it for it. So, technically, he is missing 3 pre-reqs.

A buddy of mine got into BuzEcon at UCLA and is missing two accounting courses.

If he misses a prereq that your school offers, then yes it is essentially an auto-rejection.

For the most part it's safe the assume that missing a pre-req for UCLA is usually a rejection for an impacted major. I've seen many people these past few years who apply to Biz-Econ with TAP and secondary major as regular Econ and not finish Calc 2 all get rejected

Ektaylor,

He took all the courses my school offers. 3 of the pre-reqs are not offered at my college.

Laguna,

My buddy for BuzEcon got in missing quite a few classes for pre-reqs.

Don't get me wrong, they both are 4.0 students that are highly qualified. I don't think it is fair that my buddy got denied.

accounting wasn't made a prereq until this year. It was simply encouraged in prior years to make an applicant more competitive.

UCLA is a stickler for prereqs.

I had a 3.8 with TAP

I was missing calc 2. I even indicated that I'd take it over the summer. No go.

I got admitted for my Alt major (Spanish)

Took the AP test and am fourth year level at my cc.

Your friend shouldve put an Alt major that they were competitive in.

Which prereqs? That seems highly unlikely for your CCC not to offer the prereqs for Political Science at UCLA.

As soon as i read the part about pre-reqs i was like "oh that explains everything"

Impacted majors= all pre-reqs must be done to be considered

Edit: Well actually the transfer admission guide says something slightly different

http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prosp...r/UCLA_TAG.pdf

look under poli-sci and that will explain why he was rejected.

other majors like psychology and bizecon require all.

And from what's been explained to me..at any UC, missing 4 pre-reqs is automatic non-consideration. I don't know the validity of this, but 3 is usually as far as UCs will push it. And they usually add .1 to their gpa "cut-off" if they have one. For instance, if they determine their cutoff to be 3.5, then with one missing pre-req, they're looking for students to have a 3.6 to be considered, etc.

Not sure how true that is, but it's just what I've heard...

UCLA is very strict about prereqs. I believe that Business Econ majors now need a year of accounting to transfer. UCLA is too crowded of a school and does not want their lower division courses filled with 3rd year transfers, in addition to their freshman/sophomores.
