Choosing Classes

I am beginning to choose the courses I will be taking at cc and have a few questions.

My goal is to transfer to Berkeley as a political science major. I will obviously be taking all the the pre-req classes for that major.

That said, my question is about the other classes required for IGTEC. For example, does it matter what science or math classes I take as long as they are IGTEC/UC approved? For example, it I wanted to take a class like General Geology instead of something more challenging like Physics with Calculus would they hold it against me? Or will they not care if I took easy science/math classes b/c its not what I'm majoring in?

I appreciate your feedback.

The beauty of IGETC is that you get to choose most of the courses that you want just as long as it's under an IGETC-eligible class. So no, Berkeley won't hold it against you

My counselor told me before that the UCs do look at the difficulty level of your courses and take that into consideration when deciding your admission.

But calc-based physics is completely irrelevent to her major, so I can't imagine they would take issue with it

No, they don't care at all what kind of math and science classes you take if you're a polisci major. I took Stats, Physical Anthropology w/ lab, and Astronomy without the lab to fulfill my igetc requirements. I got into Berkeley, so it's no big deal.

I can't speak for other majors but I assume anything not math or science related will not care if you take Geology or Physics as long as you fulfill the requirement.

Plus, the harder the class, the harder it is to get an A, and your gpa could suffer. Don't take the harder one if you don't want to. It really doesn't matter.

thanks for the advice guys! easy science classes here I come .

oh, another question, what is a good math class to take for someone who is not the best at math? I realize that I can't get away with algebra but I would like to avoid mumbo jumbo advanced super calculus classes. Any advice??

Statistics for sure. I suck really bad at math and it was easy for me. I basically taught myself from the book because my teacher was horrible. Its just a lot of word problems with formulas. Just a note, I also suck at word problems and still had no problems. I ended up with a B but I was really close to an A and could have got it if I went to class all the time and got attendance/participation points.

Yeah, stats is really easy and precalc isn't bad either. It's pretty much just algebra all over again

Definitely stats. I know you said you want to go to Berkeley, but if you're applying to UCLA as well, they actually require a statistics class for poli sci majors - two birds, one stone!
