I am currently a student at a California Community College. I'm an English major hoping to transfer to UCLA in fall 2009.

My situation is that I received an F in an architectural design class and I'm considering doing academic renewal at my CC.


I heard that academic renewal will wipe out the entire semester instead of just the individual grade. Is this true?

I also heard a few exceptions where some students had the unsatisfactory grade removed from their transcript/excluded from their GPA without getting rid of all their grades from that semester (this only applies if the class is not related to your major/is not a pre-req for your major). Is this also true?


The problem is I have 3 A's and 1 B that semester and I don't want to get rid of all my grades (I would have a decent GPA without the F). I just want the F out of my GPA and possibly off my transcript. It's the only unsatisfactory grade I have and I am sweating bullets over it.

Something else to keep in mine is that the class is obviously not a pre-req for my major (English) and is also not on the IGETC. Can someone tell me if that makes any difference?

I don't want to waste time re-taking the class, and I don't have room in my schedule for it (I'm taking 5 honors classes inorder to become TAP certified).

Is academic renewal the only option for me?

don't you kinda feel like one of the counselors at your school might be a better place to find an answer?
i mean you don't even specify which CCC and I'm sure policies vary...

YOu need to go to your community college and ask them how academic renewel works there.

Or read your college catalog.

Yes I'm aware that I have to see my counselor but the counseling office has been completely booked for the past three weeks since the semester is coming to an end. I've been trying to make an appointment for several weeks now with no luck.

I just wanted to see if anyone went through the same situation that I'm in now or if anyone has had experience with academic renewal and could give me some advice

Academic renewel works differently at each community college though- your cc should list on the website more info on it though, try that.

My CCC had an academic renewal form (in PDF format) in the counseling section of the website, maybe yours does too.

IMO, you're out of luck if you want to use AR to wipe one F in a specific term. AR's just not used that way.

Improving a grade point average

Course repetition:

When students receive a substandard grade ("D," "F," or "NC") for a course, they may repeat it once in order to have only the new grade used when their grade point average is computed. However, the original grade will not be removed from the transcript, and additional credit will not be granted. Course repetition cannot be used to make up an incomplete ("I") grade. A course with a substandard grade can only be repeated a second time with approval from the dean of counseling.

Academic renewal without course repetition:

Academic renewal allows students to have up to 15 units of substandard grades ("D," "F," or "NC") excluded (without the student’s having to repeat the course) from their grade point averages. To be eligible, students must have earned 20 consecutive units of "C" grade work or better since the substandard grades were assigned. To be considered consecutive, all units earned in a given semester must be "C" grade work or better. Students interested in academic renewal should request a petition from the Admissions Office.
