You have to take 33a for the major. For any major in the math department. If they said you cant test out of it then you must take it

Is there anyway I can take 115AH now and leave 33a for next summer?

you can switch within the math department all you want. Math/Econ is under the math department, they will let you change to any of their majors without any problems.
Should I just apply as math and switch when I get there then? I have a 2-year-old C in macro that I can't retake.

well nothing is ever "guaranteed", so its better to be safe. also, math/econ has a high acceptance rate so i would still apply to math/econ if i were you

Is maths acceptance rate significantly higher?

Really they will let you change to any of the math majors. And you even do your orientation with math majors. When i was there i was the only one that was math / econ at orientation , everyone was math/ applied/ etc

A little update. I also have another question for all the math majors.

I went to my orientation yesterday, what an eye-opener! I realize I grossly underestimated the intensity of my original plan. Needless to say, a lot of things happened.

First, the math adviser STRONGLY discouraged us from taking Math 131A. This and the fact that most of my teachers at my CC told me it was pretty much the hardest class in the major makes me not want to take it this fall.

However, despite not taking math 33A (lower division Linear Alg), I convinced the math adviser to allow me to enroll in Math 115. I think another reason I was allowed to do this is because, apparently, it is EXTREMELY important that incoming transfers take 115 in their first quarter so they can take other upper division classes later on and graduate on time.

As a result of all this, I will only be taking one math class this fall. Despite not taking linear alg at a community college, I have been doing self-study and will even familiarize myself with the 115A stuff before classes even begin on the 24th.

As of right now, I'm enrolled in 4 classes, 18 units. two upper division accounting, upper division econ, and Math 115A. I know most people take 3 classes and the Orientation Counselors STRONGLY discourage taking 4 classes in the first term. Furthermore, I am only enrolled in the "normal" section of Linear Algebra. This means that I will not be eligible for either the scholars or honors program.

So here is my new question.

Would it be a better idea to drop economics (must do this because of schedule conflict) and switch into the honors linear algebra (Math 115AH)? This way I am only taking three classes (Linear Alg + 2 accounting) and am still eligible for the honors program. Although I haven't actually taken lower division linear algebra, I will be doing self-study for the course. I also know another girl asked the adviser if she could take Math 115AH and was told that it would be unwise.

Which would be better? I personally am leaning more towards dropping that econ class and taking Math 115AH.

lol accounting at UCLA is killer weeder courses. Good Luck.

You are not really listening to what the counselors are telling you or to what people who have done it are telling you. For one this is not community college, it is UCLA, it is UCLA MATH and it is a 10 week course. These courses are intense. For accounting there is a LOT of competition and the courses are curved and a lot of smart people do not do well. Just be careful, you may overload yourself and get discouraged.

I strongly advise you against ANY honors math courses your first quarter.

Take Math 115, Take Econ and 1 accounting course and nothing else.

So then I should just forget about the honors program? For Math/Econ you need to take 115AH and 110BH or 131BH. If I don't take 115AH I'm automatically disqualified for honors. And if I don't take 115AH then there will be no point in taking any other honors sections. Is the honors program not worth it?

You can do honors college. I think you are talking about departmental honors.

Honors is something you consider after taking a quarter or two at UCLA. You have not had a single upper div math course, you dont really know what you are getting into so it is unwise to jump into honors.

Edit: i looked up the requirements for departmental honors- and you would be able to most likely take a different honors class or take a graduate linear algebra class to fulfill 115AH if you really wanted to do departmental honors.

I dont personally see the need in doing it unless you have some undying desire for it.

I'm planning on taking similar courses too. My major is mathematics/applied science and I'm considering the actuarial science track so I plan to take:

Math 115A (Linear Algebra)
Econ 101 (Microeconomic Theory)
Management 1B (Principles of Accounting II)

Do you guys think that's an ok schedule for the fall? To easy? Hard? or just ok? Thanks

Yeah I’m registered for Econ 11 for Summer Session C. I’m just a little concerned since the counselor at orientation recommended me to take an upper division elective instead of Management 1B, he mentioned accounting is very timing and difficult plus is not a requirement for the actuarial track anymore. However, I took Management 1A (Accounting I) at my community college and found it a bit challenging but nothing compare to cc linear algebra. Anyways, I don’t want to take upper division electives that I don’t need. I rather complete the necessary units needed to graduate by getting a minor in accounting or stats.

Do you think I should make adjustments too? Thanks
