I'm double majoring in psychology and film(aka visual arts; media). luckily I saved a half-year of college because I had a crap-top of AP units when I graduated high school(08)

Sam - I'd recommend getting an apartment in the general area. If you don't mind commuting, you should try to get an apartment a little ways out of the La Jolla area. The rents are sky high here, and the apartments are old and definitely not worth the high rent.

If you don't mind a 15 minute commute, I would recommend the Mission Valley area. As far as price and quality is concerned, the area is, in my opinion, the best value. It is also an ideal location in San Diego. It is right off of 3 major freeways, and is so centrally located it only takes about 10-15 minutes to get to anywhere of interest in San Diego.

I'm still waiting to hear back...I remember those UCLA trick threads, but so far I haven't heard of any tricks to see if you were admitted early to UCSD. My Avg GPA was 3.45 with 61 units. Applied for Winter 2010 as a Political Science: Public Law major....I'll keep you updated!!!

Sam - I just moved to the La Jolla area so i'm not too familiar with this area yet. I would recommend that before selecting an apartment here, try to stay in the area for a few days and make SURE that you see the actual apartment before you sign the lease.
It's my first time ever moving from home and i'm having buyers remorse with my apartment. I stupidly chose one on a busy street with no air conditioning. This means I have to choose between being hot and stuffy and quiet, or cool and breezy and noisy. Also, the people above me walk like giants and I can hear everything they do. I really wish I would have done my research before moving in. I stupidly assumed that because it's in La Jolla it would have to be perfect.
Mission Valley is probably the best value, BUT it is far away and that would mean you have to either take public transit (good luck...) or you would have to pay hundreds of dollars for a parking space on campus. Try to get an apartment that is on the UCSD shuttle route. Apartments around here will usually advertise that they are on the shuttle.
You can't post pictures here, can you? I have a list of apartments in the area from UCSD and their locations on the shuttle route.

Definitely take some time to check out an apartment complex at different times before signing the contract unless you're really not picky. I'd want to see how bad traffic and parking is during peak hours, if it gets noisy at night, if vagrants frequent the area. Vagrants are an issue in some parts of Mission Valley. Auto theft is also an issue.
I believe there's a shuttle out of Mission Valley. If not, or if it's not convenient, I strongly advise living within a short walk of the trolley. I like the area along Fenton Parkway. It's close to the trolley, restaurants, a public library, Costco (big plus for me) and the stadium. It's also close enough to the freeway that you avoid most of the Mission Valley mess if you drive. I worked on the other side of that shopping complex for a couple years. I wouldn't hesitate to live there...actually, I was planning to, but decided quitting work for school was a better idea.
Driving in Mission Valley during peak hours totally sucks. I used to work next to the stadium and I'd get to work at 5 AM and workout at a nearby gym to avoid the traffic around there.

Sam, I hope our chances of getting in are good. Hopefully my chances are better than yours. =p
Unfortunately I don't know at all. UCSD is my only real plans. I also applied to UCSC, but I have no intentions of moving. Everyone keeps saying guaranteed, but if it's really guaranteed, then why not click the IGETC and TAG boxes and let the webpage automate our acceptances immediately? If it's guaranteed, they really shouldn't need a person to review our applications. In my mind, that extra time for processing can only be used to trim the list, and that doesn't make my mind feel good at all.
