about to get a D/F

Hello all. Here is my situation. With only 4 weeks left in the quarter, I'm about to fail Accounting 1B. I do not understand it at all, because my 1A professor was horrible. The deadline for dropping a class with a "W" has already passed. I have a 3.84 GPA (mostly A's with a few B+'s). I don't know whether to stay in the class and try my best to get a C or if I should purposely fail it and try taking it again next quarter with a better professor. Is that even possible or is that only if I do academic renewal? Thanks in advance!

I would say your best bet would be to stick it out and try and earn a C, I mean; there's a reason you have such a high GPA in the first place. It shows you're typically a good student, so I figure you can at least work your butt off for a C. I don't care what anyone says, a C will ALWAYS be better than a D or an F - even if you retake the course that D or F will always haunt your transcript.

Academic renewal depends on the college you're at, typically it takes 2 years for someone to qualify - time you can be using to raise your GPA if you (theoretically speaking) get a D or an F.

I missed class for about 2-3 weeks straight due to being extremely sick (possibly swine flu) and fell really behind. I understand the whole academical renewal concept now. It's not relevant to my situation, I think. Without doing academic renewal, I could get an F now and retake the course for a higher grade. But where would I report this class on my application? Aren't there sections for "in progress" and/or "planned" courses? If I report that I'm planning to take it Winter quarter, get accepted, and they see that I dropped the course in Fall, won't they invalidate my conditional acceptance? Should I just put them in both Fall and Winter? I'm not sure if you understand my question. I'm actually sorta confusing myself now.

especially if you are applying for you UC's this week. they won't see that you retook the class by the time they are making their decisions. it will just be an F weighing your GPA down.

If it does get you rejected you can always appeal the decision once you have retaken the course(except CAL).

what about like an incomplete grade? Would that be better? At my school, if for emergencies (like being sick for like 2-3 weeks) you can get an incomplete which is not an f. It's like you can still work on the grade. I dont know all of the ends and outs...check it out though...because my cousin was really sick and some of her grades are incomplete. Sounds like a good option. I think it involves talking and kissing a$$ to your teacher.

I am in the same predicament as you. I just withdrew from a class and I plan to take it next quarter. Should I put IP or W under my current courses? If I put W will it hurt my chances of getting accepted, or should I put the IP and explain why i withdrew in the January update?

Rwasko: I'm pretty sure there isn't such thing at my school :/

sophie24: Exactly! That's what I'm trying to ask.

I think you should just put the W. I mean, they don't even look at your application until January (when you update your Fall grades), which is why transfer admission results come out much later compared to freshmen admission. Personally, I think it's not going to make any difference whether you put the W now or in January.
