i'm going to get rescinded from ucla

hey everyone . . . so i have a big problem...

i took stats this last semester (one year transfer). i'm a good math student (760 on the math section of the sat), got an a on the first midterm but the teacher gave a POP midterm for the second one which was worth 4x as much. he didn't tell us he was going to do it and so nobody had the formulas memorized and of course we all failed miserably. i needed a 95 on the final to pass and i got a 91 . . . it's a prereq for poli sci.

i've known about the situation for a while and i've made plans for next year if i do get rescinded but i hate hate hate losing a year of time. is there any way i could switch to history (i was planning to double major in it and have done all the prereqs, i am also close to a ucla professor who also taught at my cc)? it doesn't have the stats requirement. at this point i am resigned to my fate (hence the title haha) but am looking for any loopholes. i can't believe my entire future is going to get screwed from one crazy teacher- only two people passed the class.

any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks

i got a D which is technically a pass but not the C that the contract requires. and you can't take prereqs over summer school, otherwise i would just retake it

have you reported the changes online?

New Bruins - Reporting Changes - Transfer Students - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions

I would have updated the form that you are retaking the course in summer and take it in summer just incase they will let you repeat it.. You said you have known about this awhile?

call your admissions officer and ask her/him if you can switch majors and thus change your acceptance conditions

Technically a "D" is not really considered a pass since UCs will not recognize any grade below a C for GE requirements.
That is also why the P/NP threshold is at a C- for the lowest passing grade.

Based on your academic performance, it appears that you scored rather well on your first midterm and final. It seems that you only failed your pop quiz. How was it possible for you to receive a D in the class?

oh man..it doesnt look good. 2 people passed the class only? are you sure about that?? you should have used ratemyprofessor!
People get rescinded all the time for failing unrelated classes that they decided to take for fun. I dont think this will be an acception, sorry. best of luck! at least youre not staying for 3 years!

I would make an appointment to talk with the head of the Math Department at your college. I do not know how many students were in your Statistics class but if it was, say 20, and only two passed, that would mean 90% of the class failed the course. That is not a reflection on the students, it is a reflection on the instructor and a very bad one. It is not reasonable to think that only two students in an entire class had the ability and motivation to pass a course that was properly taught. I find it hard to believe that the Math Department would accept such a result. I would hope that the head of the Math Department would point out to the instructor how unreasonable he is being and persuade him to recalculate the grades so that they would not be distributed in such an absurd manner.

The problem is that a teacher who would give an un-announced midterm and give it a weight four times that of the announced midterm sounds like he could be someone who is just plain malicious and got the exact outcome he wanted. If he has tenure he might not care how bad this situation makes him look or how unhappy the head of the Math Department might be with him.

I did file a "undeserved grade" complaint but it will take 6-8 weeks to process especially since the teacher does not teach summer school. I did use ratemyprofessor but because of my place in the enrollment lottery his was the only class left
He also teaches at CSU Dominguez Hills, so I assume he doesn't care about his tenure, no.

I don't know who my counselor is . . . anyone know how to find out?

what is his name! I just took stats @ Cal State dominguez hills Spring 2010 with Jeffrey Post.. This teacher was a pushover and a horrible professor in general. The tests were open book & very rudimentary... I didn't learn very much.. lol
