how hard is it to get into the accounting minor? for those who got in, can you post your overall GPA and the grades you got for the prereqs. thanks!... also, does anyone know if getting a internship/job at a big 4 is hard... cuz you have to compete with USC.

Yeah, I got into to it. It can be sort of tough. The minimum to get into the minor is 3.2 GPA overall and 3.2 in prerequisite courses. Accounting courses at UCLA are very tough and are graded very harshly. Competition is cut throat. Only those who are natuarally good at math and accounting manage to get As and Bs. It is so tough I am now considering not finishing the minor for the sake of my GPA since I am a Business Econ major anyway. Bottom line: only go into if you are good at math and think accounting is what you really want to do.

Thanks for that post, JimmyJones. I was also wondering about minoring in accounting since I'd think such a minor (w/ a Business Econ. major) would give me an edge, but if you say it's really cut-throat and difficult, I probably shouldn't bother! (I'm not naturally good at math, anyway).

Well if you're looking for an easy minor, do asian american studies, LOL.

Hey, once you are in the minor, you only need a C or above on the upper division courses to finish the minor.
I got A on all the prereq. courses and my GPA is 3.93.
Admission to the program is not that cut-throat as you might think, though.

Do a global studies minor. I think up to 2-3 of the classes overlap with econ so you hardly have to take any classes. It is much easier than a accounting minor and if you are looking to do any international business than def. go for that. If you are looking to be an accountant than obviously the accounting minor would be suggested but if you want to be an ibanker there are a lot of choices.

statistics can be another minor that can give you that edge when trying to get a job. If you want to get an mba than most of the ivy/top10 schools suggest doing a minor in something not related to your field of study. Possibly adding poli-sci minor, global studies minor, history minor will help you when applying to mba programs. Look at stanford's mba admission page. Of course Double majoring is probably the most compelling but in the end were you can get the highest GPA is of the most importance (for mba).

If your a sociology major with a 4.0 and everything else is identical to a econ major with a 3.0 the sociology major would get into much better mba schools (assuming everything else is identical gmat, ect). In fact the majority of mba programs are composed of students from undergraduate studies in areas other than econ and business at the top schools. Oh and get good grades in your math courses!
