  • GPA weighted: Not sure what scale we're using here, lol!
  • GPA unweighted: 4.0
  • Rank or % estimate: 1/811
Subjective:
  • Essays: Pretty good, maybe excellent, depending on who the reader is, lol.
  • Teacher Recs: Excellent.
  • Counselor Rec: Unsure; as you can see, I attend a large school with many people applying for private and OOS colleges, so I don't think my GLC would be as devoted to my rec as some of the other applicants who got accepted.
  • Hook (if any): Erm... I'm a minority? And my devotion to choir, I guess.
Location/Person:
  • State or Country: California
  • School Type: Public
  • Ethnicity: Chinese-American
  • Gender: Female
  • Legacy Yes/No: No
  • Recruited Yes/No: No
  • Important ECs: Choir - Regional Honor Choir 2006 & 2007; Choir - Intermediate Women's Show, section leader (2005-2006); Choir - Advanced Chamber, president (2006-2008); Choir - Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus, a nonprofit organization that tours Europe for three weeks giving goodwill concerts (summer 2007); Spring Musical, sextet and chorus (2006); I also got accepted into All-State this year, though I didn't put it on my app because I hadn't known at the time.
Other Factors:
I'm ridiculously obsessed with UNC, I guess, haha! Also, I wasn't afraid to show some of my weaknesses, such as my disbelief at doing so much with choir, and I stayed true to myself on my app and highlighted how much I grew over the years via choir, rather than just listing accomplishments. I think that definitely helps.
General Comments/Congratulations/etc:
Life goes on regardless of the decision you received

Accepted Out of State. Into Honors Program too.

SAT: M:760 CR:740 W:720
13 APs at Graduation
White Male Austin, Texas
Top 7% of class

I am kinda curious if the honors program is anything to really be proud of? Anyone have any input?

Congratulations, lstarrsmith! You betcha that Honors Program acceptance is a thing to be proud of! Go over to the main UNC-CH forum and look for a recent thread about UNC Scholarships and Honors for more info. UNC only offers Honors slots to about 200 incoming freshmen. You should be very proud of yourself!

My older son is a junior at UNC and wasn't offered Honors admission, but he applied to and was accepted into the program in January of his freshman year and has really enjoyed and benefited from the experience. It's a terrific program!

My younger son just got into UNC EA, too, like you, but hasn't heard anything from Honors, so if he chooses to go to UNC, maybe he'll go the Honors route his brother took. :-)

Smith: To get Honors at UNC is a big deal. There are plenty of kids here in the Honors program who turned down big name schools. I've noticed a lot of people have turned places like Cornell and Cambridge because they got scholarships/accepted into the honors program. I even know a good number of kids who turned down ivies/big name schools without even getting into the honors program.
