2009 – 2010
UA - BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT SHUTTLE SCHEDULE for 2009-10

The cost for the shuttle will be $30 one way and $60 round trip.

Reservations for the shuttle must be made through the UA Housing office. We will accept credit card or check payment, no cash payments. Payment must be received in order to reserve a seat. Students requesting a reservation should come to the housing office to pick up an information sheet.

Thanksgiving Break
Tuesday, November 24th, departure times will be 7am, 10am, 1pm
Wednesday, November 25th, departure times will be 7am, 10am

Pick Up
Sunday, November 29th, pick up times will be 2pm, 5pm, 9pm

Do kids regularly go into Birmingham from Tuscaloosa to enjoy some of the city life? And is there a shuttle to the Birmingham Airport outside of the one you mentioned that might be available any weekend? Since Birmingham is a short flight home to New Orleans, would be great if son could fly home on a weekend when homesick, or for Mom's birthday! Southwest flights are not expensive, and with that extra money from all those scholarships, wouldn't mind springing for a spur of the moment trip home once in a while.

I imagine that some kids do go to B'ham occasionally for some "city life," but I don't know how often they go. DS1 (who is a junior) has gone a few times for a few concerts and such. DS2's girlfriend goes to UAB, so he has driven there a few times to see her. B'ham is about 60 miles away.

But, I also know that some kids do arrange for friends to drop them off and pick them up from B'ham airport on various weekends when their friends are going that direction anyway.

Quite a few people do go to Birmingham for special events, from what I've seen, but
Tuscaloosa does have a good amount of things to do, though many places are 19+.

Being that you're in New Orleans, have you considered taking the train? It takes just under 6 hours and seems to cost $35 each way. The train station is in downtown Tuscaloosa, but you could walk it or rent a car. I know people that take this option to avoid the hassle of guest parking at UA.

Sea-tide...what a great suggestion...the train from New Orleans to T-town!!!... When you consider that one has to get to airports so early, and in this case, first fly to B'ham and then drive to T-town, going DIRECTLY by train is such a better idea!!!

And, since they probably do want to visit UAB, then can use a rental car to get there when they want to go.

Do you mind if I pm Montegut with your suggestion???

Small problem. Only one train goes from New Orleans to Tuscaloosa (on the way to New York) and it leaves at 6 in the morning.

6 in the morning is early...but usually when people take road trips or take morning flights, they have to leave early or get to the airport early.

Leaving at 6 in the morning isn't really that bad. You'd get to T-town around noon. Your plans for the rest of the day and the next day would depend on whether you arrived on a weekend or a weekday.

You certainly can PM the suggestion to Montegut. I agree that 6am is not that early. Plus, driving/flying takes 4-5 hours as it is, so it would be the same problem with either of those options. There are branches of a rental car agency in Tuscaloosa and Northport that would pick them up at the train station. An afternoon arrival still leaves plenty of time for a full day on campus.

Wow, thanks for the train suggestion, guys! This is great for Daddy, as he hates to fly. Really, the wait at the airport is not bad for us, because we live about ten minutes from the airport, would just bring a carry on, and earn some Southwest credits.

As for the early time, that's great for us. We are early birds, and got up at four to drive to a noon open house, so if we could get to T-town for an afternoon visit, it would be awesome!

Not to hijack another thread, but I wonder if this might the way to go to Clemson, since that one seems to be a real hassle to get to, but one I think is worth a visit if accepted.

My DS1 loved Clemson. It was one of the first colleges we visited, however, he wasn't enough in the way of merit $$$ - even with NMF, 4.7 GPA, ACT 33, Valedictorian, 7 APs, etc. If we had been "in-state" he would have gotten more. (Frankly, one of the reasons DS1 later loved UA - after visiting UA later - is because it had the same "feel" and similar "look" as Clemson).

I don't know if the train goes by Clemson. Clemson was hard to get to from where we live - no direct route.

Yep, found it. The Crescent 20. Does stop some between New Orleans and Tuscaloosa, but not much. Surprisingly short ride. A far ride to Clemson, though, but may be worth it. Husband actually took this train to Baltimore when he had to go for work and refused to fly. Son is really looking forward to using the train to travel the country. Interesting that he can actually take a train from Tuscaloosa all the way to DC. Now, that would be a fun trip. Y'all are giving me ideas for retirement. Hey, if son goes to UA, maybe I actually WILL be able to retire. Just kidding!
