Capstone Day, timing, invite

Want to get a little more info on Capstone Day.

First off, do you need to pay your deposit in order to be invited to this?

When is it usually held?

We won't hear from a couple of colleges until February, and if I remember correctly, Capstone Day is usually in January.

We are trying to hold off on nonrefundable deposits until we hear from these other colleges, so that will be past the Capstone Day.

However, we'd really like son to attend the Capstone Day to get a good visit post football season with more of an academic slant, hopefully.

Any info on this would be much appreciated.

I don't know if paying the deposit is what triggers the invite or not. I would think that applying to the honors college is the trigger for the invite.

Call Jami (recruitment for Honors College) and ask if your NMSF child can attend. I'm almost certain the answer would be "yes".

For some reason I can't open the Honors College website today. Anyone else having that problem?

Montegut, I don't know why your son hasn't received an invitation. I'm sure it has nothing to do with paying the deposit as I didn't pay mine until February and Capstone Scholars Day is still trying to sell students on coming to Alabama, though I'm sure many paid their deposits already. Call Jami Gates and ask about attending. It usually starts in the morning (8 or 9am) and lasts until late afternoon. AFAIK, breakfast and lunch will be served.

The Honors College website was recently updated, so it has been down a lot more than usual. With spring registration so close, one would think students would need to go on the website and look at course descriptions.

The Honors Website is down. UA is fixing the problem now.

my DD got one. hasn't paid they deposit and hasn't applied to the honors college.

if she qualifies for enough scholarship $$ for alabama to still be on the table (we will know that by the end of november), we will be going to capstone day.

Thanks, y'all for the names, numbers. I'll make sure to call so son can get an invite.

Is it on a weekend and what weekend, usually?

We're applying for the Honors colleges at UAB and the app indicated that you have to do an interview. They give you a choice of weekends, so want to schedule it around Capstone Day.

We finally got an invitation to the Capstone Scholars Day.

President Robert E Witt and Provost Judy Bonner invite you to join other outstanding students for our annual Capstone Scholars Day. Jan 16, 2010 8:30a-2:00p. That's all it says. I guess I'm gonna have to lean on my CC friends to fill me in on exactly what the heck this is. Anybody?

^^

Glad to hear you got your invite!!

We've never gone, but I would imagine that it is similar to University Days, with the added emphasis on Honors College offerings and Honors Housing. University Days tours various housing ops, but I imagine that Capstone Day features Honors dorms.

Here's the schedule for U Days...it runs about the same amount of time. (scroll down for all info)

Since the admissions section wouldn't be needed, that might be a time that they discuss Honors stuff.

Navarre1,

I went to last year's Capstone Scholars' Day and remember the schedule somewhat (it's the only paper from UA I didn't bring with me, lol). Unless they decided to change things this year, the schedule should be something along the lines of:

8:30-9:00 Student and guest check in at Bryant Conference Center, both will receive name tags and goody bags (pencils, Capstone Scholars' Day Stationary, etc). Continental breakfast will be served outside the conference room.
9:00-10:30 Various speeches from Honors College, Current Students, and College Deans, Students are with their guest
10:30-11:45 Students and Guests split up, with the guests and students going into different conference rooms. Students are then divided by college and will go to lunch with other prospective students. Guests have lunch with other guests.
11:45-2:00 Students go to an information session at their college while guests have 2 sessions in which they can go to seminars or take a campus tour.
2:00-2:30 Students and guests meet up at Bryant Conference Center, where students will get a gift. Students and guests then have the opportunity to tour dorms or the rec center before they leave. This involves a long line of cars in front of the Ridgecrest buildings.

*These are estimated times, there was a CSD website, but it is currently redirecting me to the scholarship website.
The invitation said 1 guest per student, but some had both parents come. I think they use the major declared on the application for group placement. It is interesting to know that students do not get a campus tour, but do get a tour of their college. History says it will be cold in Tuscaloosa this weekend, but I highly encourage those invited to attend. If there is no RSVP phone number or postcard provided, I would be surprised.
