| National Merit Package
I just got the happiest little piece of paper telling me I'm a NM Finalist, which just about made my parents sing with joy because of the awesome scholarship package UA gives, but I'm wondering if any other scholarships can be stacked onto this one.
Can I still get the engineering departmental scholarship and the parent alumni scholarship? Or since the package is meant to cover everything but meals, do I just take it as is? Because I'd really like to have a little more money for summers abroad if possible.

Hi!
Congrats on being a NMF!
You should be able to stack the engineering scholarship on top!
Did you apply to Bama as an Engineering major? If so, then haven't you been notified about your Engineering scholarship? If not....

I don't know about the other scholarships and if they would stack. I only know that the engineering one stacks.

Besides the engineering scholarship, UA might add others if they wanted to. However, if you win any outside scholarships, it is UA policy not to reduce aid; they will count fully towards whatever you owe. Congratulations on getting NMF.

Your NM package does come with $2,000 that can be used toward studying abroad or summer research.

Also, most students didn't realize and UA did begin advertising it more, but you can use the tuition part of your scholarship to study abroad as well. If you are out of state, you are actually luckier than in state students because you'll have more money to spend studying abroad. Instate tuition ~$3500 Out of state ~$9600

uaprophet - my dd would be on the scholarship where she gets 2/3 OOS tuition taken care of, so a 12600 discount. do you know how study abroad would work with that??
of course, with the 16 hour limit and 8 semester limit ... not sure if she owuld have room in her schedule for study abroad.

Hey I'm also a very excited NMF. But I have a question about the UA scholarship package. Since it's a guaranteed package, does that mean I am guaranteed the full ride as long as I choose it as my first choice college by May 31st?

Mike....
You'd have to email the school and ask. I've seen the study abroad info for those with full-tuition scholarships, but not for those with 2/3.
Is your D still considering nursing? Will she come in with AP credits? Can she take a class or two during the summer at a local CC? If so, she might be able to do a study abroad before she begin clinicals.

Where are you getting that May 31st date? Did Bama give you that date? Why wouldn't you be able to decide before that (such as by May 1st)?
Bama has a scholarship acceptance date (don't know what it is), but some kids request extensions.

The National Merit corporation has May 31st as the deadline for reporting a first choice college. I'm not necessarily saying that that's when I will decide by.

Yekim92, I think you are confusing National Merit's rules with UA's rules. UA requires a decision by May 1 at the latest or you are not guaranteed a spot. The scholarship acceptance deadline is actually earlier then that, but the deadline can be extended to May 1 if you request it. I'm guessing the May 31 deadline to notify NMF is to give some leeway to those that make their college decision on May 1. It can be annoying when other schools haven't even mailed out acceptances and UA already wants a deposit, but that's how things go.
Mike, I'd assume that UA would give your D the value of her scholarship towards study abroad, but I have never asked the scholarship department about it as I have full tuition. I definitely suggest taking some classes at a local CC or university over the summer. Especially in the introductory classes, the material is pretty similar at different schools.

Yekim...
If you're waiting to find out if you're accepted to another school (that doesn't give a NMF scholarship), you can still declare Bama as your #1 pick to NMCorp because that indication only concerns NMF scholarships.

Mike....
It looks like she'd have enough to do a semester abroad for soph spring semester.
Remember, during the semester abroad, the student is still collecting credits.
What country is she interested in visiting?
