What are the pros and cons of living in Pomfret, Yocum and Futrall as a freshman? As a female student I will be considering things like location on campus, cleanliness and access to food. I do plan to go through sorority recruitment if that makes any difference. Also, I heard that some rooms on each floor are actually larger than normal. I am not interested in Humphreys, Reid or any of the expensive new buildings. Any details would be appreciated!
Yocum is the most centrally located of the ones you listed and Pomfret is just a short distance from Yocum. Futrall is the furthest of the ones you listed, but there are a lot of dorms that are just as far as Futrall and the walk is not too bad. As far a food goes, both Pomfret and Futrall have their own dining halls located in the building and the dining hall for Yocum is just right next door. I would say most dorms are about the same when is comes to how clean they are. Yes there are sometimes a very few rooms that are larger than normal, but unless you are in one of the groups that picks early, you will probably not get one of those. As far as going through sorority recruitment goes, some dorms do seem to have more students who are going to rush than others.
I lived in Pomfret for my first two years and liked it a lot. It's a little far (the walk up the hill will develop your leg muscles) but there is a bus for rainy days. The dining hall is SO convenient, plus it is an Honors Dorm, so chances are better that you will get a roommate who cares about studying....at least a little. Good luck to you!
In response to nataliec, Maple Hill and Futrall will probably have a lot of residents going through rush, or at least that was the case in 2007 and 2008. When I was Freshmen I lived in Humphreys (moved out of Maple Hill) and I loved it. Everyone always has their doors open in Humphreys so its more personal. Then again, it looks horrible on the corner of Dickson and the Greek Theater right now due to construction so those dorms may be less appealing. In response to the OP, I'd pick Futrall from the options you listed. It's directly across from the best dining hall on campus (Quads), a short walk from Mullins, it's just as clean as any of the other dorms you listed, and since you're rushing it's right next to Maple St. (Sorority Row).
No problem. Another added benefit is that Garland Parking Garage is right next door and that will be nice to have the first time there's any kind of storm (hail, snow, ice). Yeah, the A/C may encourage people to close their doors, but it's still a good dorm. From what you told me about yourself the only dorm I would avoid is Pomfret. Being the Honors dorm most people won't be rushing (which is perfectly fine; I have a bunch of non-greek friends). And the food sucks, easily the worst cafeteria. Followed closely by Brough.
