Berkeley's Amtrak Station Safe at night?

Im planning a trip from the Amtrak Station at the end of University Ave. for the upcoming holiday. Ive heard many say the station is in a quite sketchy part of town and that waiting for the train at night is a nervous experience.

Supposedly, they installed renovations several years ago, and "improved" the environment/facilities of the station. I have personally never been to the station so I'm not sure how safe the station is overall, during late hours (9-10pm).

Can anyone shed light on the situation for me? How run down is the station? Is there an indoor waiting area? Are the improvements significant? If its deemed unsafe, I will have to take the very early morning train.

Thanks.

I didn't feel terribly endangered at the station...but I tend not to worry much.

I'd say that it looks much worse than it really is.

The Amtrak station in Emeryville is probably safer than Richmond. If Berkeley's station is monitored by police, it would be fine; the area is sketchy at night.
