Ask a current Cal student anything!

It's been a while since I posted here. I'm procrasinating and trying to avoid doing an essay for my R1B.

In any case, for all you new peeps that are looking to come to Cal this fall, this thread is the place for you to ask any sort of question. If you are a student already don't hesistate to post an answer!

About myself: EECS, 1st year. Currently taking: Math 54 (Linear Algebra), Physics 7B, Comparitive Lit R1B, CS61C (Machine Structs)

Go!

Fine then. Is it ever possible to get a single room as a freshman male? Thanks!

i wouldn't rule it out completely but it would make your life easier to give up on it. the university needs to hold more and more people in the dorms every year and double rooms, well, can hold twice as many people. singles are for upperclassmen anyway and unless there's a compelling reason, they won't give you a single as a freshman.

It's rare as riyam says. I have a friend or two who are in singles mainly because they got lucky and their roommates either flaked out or moved out to an apartment

foothill is not hopeless, it's hit or miss, but a hit=decent.

This is for anyone.. so I want to apply to the CS major... but I'm not doing so hot in EE 40/42/100 right now... I'm probably in the C range right now.. it will definately be tough to bring it up to some sort of B....

..so what are my options? try really hard to get the grade up? perhaps just fail it and take it over another semester? .. I'm a 2nd year btw and hoping to apply during the summer..

o, and is it possible to take it P/NP and then for letter grade another semester? I'm guessing not...

Well you're a year ahead of me so..

Are you doing EECS or just plain old CS? 'Cause if I'm not mistaken you don't have to apply to plain old 'CS anymore. There's no more only a certain percent get in thing.

I'm going for L+S CS... and as far as I know, they haven't confirmed that the CS major would be unimpacted.. well, at least for now you still have to apply ( I spoke to a CS advisor last month)...

So again... what should I do? I'm thinking.. if I do end up with something like a C, I would still have a good chance of gettin in because my grades in the other prereqs are pretty good and the admissions standards aren't as high as they used to be..

What are your stats that got you into EECS? How difficult are you finding the course load? What is it like living with a roommate for the first time (assuming), and is there an issue of a difference in interests between you two?

Q:What are your stats that got you into EECS?
A: Eh, I kinda forgot but 3.95 UW GPA | 4.2-4.3 UC GPA | 740 V 700 M 680 W Or somewhere around there | 5 AP CS AB, APUSH, Calc BC, US Gov&Pol, 4 AP Chem | 760-770 MathIIC, 730-740 Chem SATII

Q: How difficult are you finding the course load?
A: Pretty ****ing hard. I got my ass handed to me on a platter first semester. Doing a little better now, but still hard. The midterms (of which there are usually two!) are just arrggh!

Q: What is it like living with a roommate for the first time (assuming), and is there an issue of a difference in interests between you two?
A: Well.. I'm in an odd situtation. Two roomates, both juniors. One's habit is a bit weird as in he sleeps during the day and works at night (but I'm a heavy sleeper so it bothers me not). And he's a bit anti-social and anti-noise. He hates in when the TV is on, and he doesn't like having the door open which I really want to do. My other roomate is gay. 'Nuff said.

How is the social scene especially the dating scene? On CC, the "ugly girls" thing is always said, but does the ugly also apply to the guys? (<--Stupid question I know, but it's just good to know the answer. Thanks.)
