Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
Location: California
School Type: Small Public (1400 students), Very uncompetitive (only about 1/2 even goes onto college, most of those are Community College. Sends around 5-10 people to Berkeley, though.)
I'm a first-generation college student.
GPA:
Un-weighted: 3.88
Weighted: 4.4
UC GPA: 4.13? I'm not 100% sure on that.
Rank: Top 4% (9 or 10 out of 357)
SAT I:
1970: 760M, 630 CR, 580W (9 essay)
This is on first try. I was actually in Berkeley at a concert (The Arcade Fire!!!) the night before the test, so I'm fairly confident to at least get at least a 2070 in October.
SAT II:
750: Math 2C
710: Biology
My class schedule is weird because our school has a block schedule.
I've taken THE most rigorous class schedule at my school. No one has taken anything more difficult.
Frosh:
Pre-Calculus H A/A
(took Pre-Calculus my Frosh year after school)
Soph
AP Stats A/A (5, one of 2 to get a 5 at school)
AP Biology B/B (4)
Digital Photo B/A
Psychology A/A
P.E. A/A
English 10H B/A
Geometry H A/A
World History H A/A
Junior:
AP English Language B/A (3 on test)
AP US History A/A (4 on test)
AP Calculus AB A/A (5 subscore)
AP Calculus BC A/A (5)
Chemistry Honors A/A
AP Chemistry A/A (5)
Psychology 101 A (local community college course offered at my high school)
Sociology 101 A (local community college course offered at my high school)
Senior Schedule:
AP English Literature
Goverment/Economics H
Physics Honors
Leadership
Spanish 3
Calculus 101C/Calculus 3 (another college course at my HS)
Philosophy 101 (another college course at my HS)
Community College Courses
-Finite Mathematics (A)
-Sociology 101 (A)
-Psychology 101 (A)
-Art 101 (A)
-Cultural Anthropology (A)
-Calculus 101C (third-year Calc, Next year)
-Philosophy 101 (next year)
So far in Community College I've taken 16 credits with a 4.000 GPA. These should all transfer to Berkeley, so my CC counselor says I will actually start as a Sophomore in college.
Extracurriculars:
I've done about 220+ hours of community service so far.
Basketball (All four years, won awards such as MVP and academic award)
DOD Math and Science Bowl or Academic League (3 years)
World Affair Challenge (2 years, our team won best overall, i got
other awards too)
Tutoring (free, 50+ hours)
LEO Club (officer)
CSF (president)
Model UN (founder and president) Thanks a lot for anyone who reads this all! |

y7bbb6: if you're OOS just post your uw GPA and weighted GPA if you know it. I don't know how UCs weigh honors/AP courses from other states.
To be completely honest, I think your GPA is too low. Berkeley OOS is really tough. I think you have a 10-20% chance.

saeraxD: I agree with vicissitudes on this one -- reach. Good GPA/scores (minus the SAT I and the last SAT II), weak ECs.
calivla: You're in pretty good shape, so I'd say Berkeley's a match.
thethimble: Though overall you seem to be a strong applicant -- good GPA, average SAT (minus the math score, which is above average), average ECs -- EECS is a competitive major, and undeclared engineering even more so. Since your ECs don't really demonstrate a focus or a passion for something as competitive, I'd say a slight reach, though you do have a good shot.
y7bbb6: Though your SAT is obviously great, your GPA (which is most important) isn't. Your honors/awards are very good, too, though your ECs less so. So I'd say Berkeley's a reach.
saasaa: Your GPA seems to be fine, though your scores are subpar. The fact that you've taken classes outside of your school and succeeded in them will look favorably on you. Your ECs are average. Your first-gen status will help you. I'd say match (maybe a high match).

| I'm pretty sure that UCs don't weight honors courses for OOSers.

Torrancecali: Yeah, transfer chances are okay too, though you should also check out the UC transfers forum if you haven't already.

| Where did you hear this from? Torrancecali, unfortunately, most of us are not familiar with the transfer admissions process. If you're a junior transfer, I don't think they even look at your SAT score. Is the UC GPA your high school GPA? And it would help if you gave a GPA you've earned so far at your CC.

oh, did you not post your stats? i don't see them.
anyways, for us to judge, i need to know the major you're applying to and how much of the course requirements (breadth and major prep) you've done. a 3.75 sounds pretty good to me, but that's a useless judgment to make without knowing what major you're trying to compete to get into.

thanks for replying! But social science admission rate is 23% so that is pretty competitive!
