Unsolved Mysteries: Case #UCB2008

I just read thru this entire thread and I have SOLVED THE MYSTERY.

On page 38, yayitsjane says she has verified that the CC username myBerkeleyApp is legitimate, and affiliated with Berkeley admissions.

Knowing that, let's revisit what myBerkeleyApp has tried to tell you:

a) Page 27, first entry, says that mid-March email was intended to go to those who had never logged in and the March 21-22 email was intended to go to ALL FRESHMAN APPLICANTS. mBA says that he/she "lost track of the 3rd email". Note that mBA does not refer to the emails by your numbering system, just by the date they were sent, and does not seem to know about a 3rd email. People on this thread jumped to the conclusion that mBA's reference to 'the third email' equated to #3 in their jargon and got (more) confused. But if you look at the dates mBA mentions, they correspond to #1 and #3.

b) Page 28, mBA says "There were an unusual number of bounces and network issues in the sending of the 3/21 email, so if you did not receive it but you are able to log in to myBerkeleyApp that is the main concern."

Imagine the admissions office during this crunch week, trying to choose between figuring out what went wrong with a mailing and who didn't get an email so it could be resent, versus meeting the deadline of announcing decisions on Thursday. Maybe that explains why so many didn't get an email that should have gone to everyone.

c) If you read this thread, from the beginning, you will find that no one claims to have received email #2. I postulate that it doesn't exist. Text for emails #1 and #3 is on page 12; no one has posted text for the phantom #2.
Likewise, no one claims to have received an email 'resend'.

If all of the above is true, then here is my predicition on the correlation between which email received/not received and admission decision:

EMAIL #1: March 15, DaVinci code APPS_UNLOGGED at the bottom
"Instructions on logging in to mBA"
1) No one who had logged in to mBA before 3/15 received email #1
2) Some people who received email #1 were admitted
3) Some people who received email #1 were not admitted
4) Some people who did not received email #1 were admitted
5) Some people who did not received email #1 were not admitted

EMAIL #2: phantom email
1) No one received email #2
2) Some people who did not receive email #2 were admitted
3) Some people who did not receive email #2 were not admitted

EMAIL #3: March 21, DaVinci code APPS_FR_WAIT at the bottom
"Wait to hear from Berkeley"

1) Some people who received email #3 were admitted
2) Some people who received email #3 were not admitted
3) Some people who never received email #3 were admitted
4) Some people who never received email #3 were not admitted

Elementary, my Dear Watson!

The theory above seems very legit, except there were a couple people who received the phantom email I believe. It was the same as #3 except it didn't have the "worth the wait" part.

duckedtape,

I didn't get it either. But honestly, I don't know what to make out of this whole email thing. There's backing for each side--that the emails mean something and that they don't. On page 44, we discussed how some students with regents got the email and some didn't. So this disproves that the emails were a sure sign that you got in and if you didn't get it, you are rejected. But it's still so bizarre. Anyway, we just can't figure out this email thing. we have less than 17 hours until we can be certain about our admissions into Berkeley. Let's try to hang in there! Don't keep your hopes up, though, since we don't know what the emails mean. Just expect the worst...if no email truly meant rejection, then you will be prepared for the news. If the emails meant nothing and you get in, then that's great! Again, let's just expect the worst.

And now, I have finally given up on trying to crack the mystery of the emails; I promise! You're welcome guys :P I apologize for posting so many redundant posts. And drsarah, sorry if I came out harshly on you. I was just nerve wracked about this whole thing.

Not sure if what I typed makes sense...I'm half asleep here...but good luck to you all. Whichever college we end up going, let's just do our best and reach our goals.

Until next time (tomorrow after 4:30PM),
yayitsjane

well Berkeley fan, here is a simple translation of what you said.
Some people will get in and others wont.
