Too funny hopefullybright!

You are absolutely right: UCLA is a great school and the brochures I'm looking over are very impressive.

Thus, my comment about how all of this is oddly fascinating to me . . . human minds have an immense capacity for rationalization and justification for our actions. Am I more impressed with UCLA at this moment because they are the only university that my S has been accepted to? If he does get into Cal and/or Stanford and/or Princeton, will my interest as a parent in UCLA suddenly seem baseless and silly? I don't think so, but my willingness to look through the UCLA materials is undoubtedly based, at least in part, on the fact that my S could theoretically be rejected by all of the other universities to which he applied.

I think Cal is well aware of this psychological "twilight zone" that students and parents are in, thus they felt the need to send the "don't reply to other UCs" e-mail.

Bottom line, hopefullybright: UCLA is a great school, and you could still very well get into Cal as well. Best of luck to you!

Cal gives the email to everyone. Stop fantasizing over something that isn't meant to be.

vc08,

You state, "Cal gives the mail to everyone."

I'm ready to be convinced. Upon what do you base your statement?

Why overanalyze something that may amount to nothing? Just wait until the 27th. It's not that far from now..

I agree with symphonyofs0und...this gives me hope (although I'm trying to not get them up TOO high)..I've gotten into USC, UCSD, UCSC, and as of today, NYU, (got rejected from Davis and UCLA) but the only school I want is Cal.

I hope you're right, Lextalionis :]

I told you why. I find this fascinating. Obviously, the university you are trying to gain admission to found UCLA's early release of admissions notifications worthy of a response.

If Cal wasn't concerned at all that its prospective students would say "Yes" to another UC (UCLA in particular), they would not have bothered to send the e-mails.

Yes. UCB's prospective students, not admitted students. If Cal only sent this email to people who have been admitted, then people who did not receive this email would infer that they have been rejected. If so, Cal would just come out officially with the decisions already.

To relieve the anxiety of those who didn't get the "doesn't mean a thing" email, here is some humor. Relax guys, it isn't over till next weekend. Laugh it out, watch some TV, play a video game, whatever... And Good luck to all !!

Here is the scene in the war room at UCB. Goes something like this:
A: Geez, UCLA announced a week early, what do we do?
B: We are not done counting the hanging chads, how can we announce the results?
C: Turn on that table lamp, I need to check this punched card - is it a hanging chad or a broken chad?
A: Quiet, Mr. C. This is more serious! Let us ask the Supreme Court what to do.
B: I called the justices and they voted to send out a teaser to the public...
A: What should we say?
C: Ignore UCD, UCI, UCSD, UCSB, UCLA, wait for another week...
A: Who do we send it to?
B: Everyone..
A: But what about those we are going to reject?
B: I am sure those who apply to UCB are smart enough to figure it's just a teaser - even our rejects are super smart!
A: I agree. On a sunny day like today, what do you think they (those who didn't get the email) will do?
Look at their extraordinary ECs, they will go out and play basketball..
C: Let us send it to some OOS too, so everyone figures it's a teaser...
A: And some internationals too..
B: And to all their parents too..
C: And to their counselors who supported them..
A: And just to confuse people, how about we don't go alphabetical...
B: Let's use that supercomputer in Lawrence Lab to generate totally random order...

Two days later....

A: Sorry, guys, I have been told our Berkeley servers are down sending too many spams and have been blocked by all ISPs. Guess, we have to mail those decisions by snail mail after all...
C: Those emails didn't affect UCB reputation, but this server being down is going to...
B: I am glad we set Apr 27th as the deadline, as we are still 4 days ahead of the IVies! Go Cal !!
A: Go Cal!!
C: Go Cal!!
