Any tips for finding a job? (Computer engineering)

I've attended five Career Center job fairs (starting in spring '07) and have applied to numerous positions, especially those for summer internships, via Cal Jobs. I've tried at least 50 employers all across the board so far, from the big tech companies (Intel, Sun, etc.) to small startups. I got a grand total of only two interviews--one last year, one earlier this year--and haven't heard back from either one. That's less than a 4% success rate of even securing a first-round interview.

I've gotten my resumés critiqued numerous times and no one has found anything wrong with it. It's laid out in a standard format, with information about projects, relevant coursework, skills, etc. I've noted my HKN membership, so it's probably not the grades. After six semesters here, it can't be the coursework, either, as I've taken many of the most popular classes by now.

The only possible problem, then, is my lack of related work experience. I took Summer Sessions classes twice, and as a result, don't have any internships thus far. However, how are you supposed to build up your resumé without being given a chance? Some are fortunate enough to have connections in the industry to get them in the door early, but I don't...so that's not really an option, either.

I never once thought that this would be a problem, especially with the Berkeley name and its proximity to Silicon Valley. Has anyone ever been in the same boat? If so, do you have any advice? Thanks in advance.

That's really strange. From a few family members and friends, I know that they only applied to maybe 4-5 places, and usually get 2-3 interviews and all get internships/jobs from those 2-3 interviews.
No one applied to 50. Maybe you should focus on which job fits you the most, change your resume to match the job description and resend it.
