I contacted Haas to confirm that my son who has taken eight AP classes can satisfy some of the 9 breadth requirments. They informed me that for incoming freshman NO LONGER will AP classes satisfy breadth classes. Haas will be adopting the breadth requirements for Letters and Science so that if a kid doesn't get into Haas then they can easily transition to another major. So for all students who have taken a lot of AP classes, credit will be earned for units, but it will NOT satisfy your Breadth classes. They said students would be informed at CALSO. HUGE DIFFERENCE. I felt that the students should have been told about this before submitting the SIR. My kid rejected Stern at NYU thinking that he had satisfied a bunch of the breadth requirements. BUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's true. You can contact the Haas school yourself to confirm. We went to visit Cal in February and they told us then there would likely be changes, but they didn't know for sure. A lot of people I think are going to be upset as they thought they could probably skate through. I think it's good though as everyone will be on the same page and getting admitted on what they do at CAL not just the AP exam. But it probably means a lot might be on the five year plan.

Demand is high so it "costs more" to go to Haas. Just applying business principles.

Will they still allow students to use AP Scores to skip certain pre reqs (specifically Math)? Also, why isn't this on their website?

I'm a Pre-business freshman right now and I think these changes are a good thing. Most intended business people will have Economics as a backup major, so they have to fulfill the requirements for both L&S and Haas at the same time, which can be very complicated to organize.

Looks like my 13 APs now count for nothing. Guess I will be taking weeder classes after all

Remember those 13 APs counted for a higher GPA and an obviously higher rigor that may have been the difference between becoming a Golden Bear and rejection. Never a waste.

The english waiver will still work with 5's. The difference is now the prereq's and the breadth classes have to be fulfilled at Berkeley or summer school etc. You can't use them to just not take a class. You will get elective credit. It's not on the website yet, as the faculty supposedly has to go through a voting process on it. But it will be explained at CALSO. The math requirement is a prereq and has to be taken so you can't use a math AP test to waive that. I think it's a good thing because now everyone will be evaluated on how they do at Cal not just on an AP exam.

So let me get this straight:
Passing the English exams will get us out of the R & C classes, but passing the Calculus exams doesn't?

That is correct from what I understand. Again you can confirm all this at CALSO. But you can get out of first and second semester english with 5's on the AP exams. I believe you still have to take a writing course. That again can be confirmed later. You have to take either a one series or a 16 series as a prereq requirement.
