How should I spend summer as a frosh/ and few questions

I will list my courses first..
I im in college of chem
Chem 4a
Math 53
for sure and
im thinking of taking physics 7a, UGBA introductory, CS, AC requirement, R1a

the thing is i was gonna take a course at CC that satisfies my R1a requirement but i failed to register because there were only few spots...
I want to ask if i can take R1a at CC next summer and takes courses at Cal without R1a? Im basically asking if i have to take R1a at freshman year.

Im also thinking of how to spend my summer. I am not a nerd and i usually spend tons of time playing games and going out.. But this time I want to do something seriously to prepare for college education. Im planning to read a lot of books but do you have any other suggestions?

thanks

since you mentioned just R1A and not R1B, I assume you're a ChemE. You can postpone R1A for your first few years, but you have to take it before ChemE 185/Engin 190 (technical writing, which most people take in their junior/senior year).

I suggest you try to have fun this summer. People who study/worry before college tend to get burned out when they finally get there. Besides, I'm not sure if preparation will really help all that much for the classes you're taking. Math 53 is straightforward, though Hutchings likes to throw a curveball or two on his finals; Physics 7A requires some more ingenuity than high school physics but is still doable if you've got a good grasp of the fundamentals; Chem 4A is a shocker for most people, but that's largely because they don't read the book. Other than maybe reviewing your AP Chem and AP Physics problems from high school, the only thing you should be doing this summer is enjoying yourself. Just be sure to buckle down during the regular school year (it's harder than it sounds, at least for most people)

Find a lab position or internship somewhere. It doesn't have to be anything significant, just something that can help you get your foot in the door for research at Berkeley.
