MCB or Chem(L&S)?

Hi everyone,

I am transferring to Cal this fall. My major is MCB with an empansis of BMB....i have go through a lot of posts in this forum and everyone insist MCB is GPA killer (i am pre-pharm) i am thinking to switch my major to Chemistry within L&S. i like inorgnic chem but i heard Physical Chem is very very hard.....

do you think upper division for Chemistry(BA in L&S) or MCB (Biological Chemistry track 2) is harder? or it's a bad idea to major either one of them in term of GPA?

Thanks!

The Chemistry major is not offered through L&S. It is only offered through the College of Chemistry. That may affect your decision right from the get-go - the two colleges have different graduation requirements, breadths, etc.

actually, there is a chemistry major in L&S--it's just that its requirements are a little bit different from that of the CoC chemistry major.

You should major in what you like--both of the majors you pointed out are tougher than most others. Or you could just major in something like American Studies while taking the pre-pharm curriculum.

The Chem major offered through L&S will give you a BA degree, so you'll be taking more humanities-related courses alongside your science courses. The BS Chemistry program offered through the College of Chemistry would be your typical heavy-duty science degree. If you're pre-pharm, the BA might give you a better chance of getting a higher GPA. Obviously the BS would be more appropriate if you want to be a career chemist.
