May I ask... What's a "UC" GPA? And how do you calculate it?

You may not be able to list all of your EC's in the spots allotted in the UC app, but you would be able to use them to explain yourself in the essays.

I would say you have a decent chance

UC's don't ignore 9th grade; it's just not factored into your UC GPA. They still ask you for your classes and can see the grades. Since you did horribly in 9th grade, your chances of getting in go down considerably. Unless you improved drastically in 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. That shows that you're dedicated and tried to improve yourself. Improvement looks very good. BUT I agree that your chances are really low just because you're out-of-state. You mentioned that you do crew. Cal is really big on crew (national championships, D1) so you might get recruited, but you have to be really good.

Yeah they do. Look at page 4 of the application.

QUOTE FROM THE SITE:
"To give the ACT writing component equal weight to the SAT writing exam, the University multiplies the sum of your converted math, reading and science scores by two-thirds, then adds the converted English/writing score. This subtotal is then added to your two highest SAT Subject Test scores from two different subject areas, which are also converted to equivalent UC Scores, to reach your UC Score Total ([math + reading + science] x 0.667 + English/writing + subject test 1 + subject test 2)."

^^^ That's the MOST ridiculous this I've ever heard in my life. Why in the hell do they make it so complicated? Wouldn't it just be easier for them to glance at your scores and GPA rather than make some huge math problem out of it?
Seriously... my brain hurts after calculating all that.

I'm sure they consider freshman year grades, but I don't think it's one of their really weighty factors. It can't hurt you THAT much.
