Classes with waitlist and seats available?

This confuses me. How come on the online schedule of classes, there are classes with open seats yet makes you join the waitlist?

I think if it's manual, they don't always update the current status of each class so the online schedule isn't always accurate. But I'm not too sure.

These classes make you join the waitlists because the discussions are full. You are waitlisted for the lecture, even though there is space in it, because all of the discussions are full.

There are also small classes, like college writing, that are requirements to graduate. Several seats remain open on the on-line schedule until the first day of class for those seniors who need the class to graduate and certain other students (like those who previously did not pass the class). If those seats are not filled by the first day of class (and they generally are not), those on the wait list who show up for the course, are admitted based on wait list number.

There are courses where there are still places for the discussions but the lectures are waitlisting. How come?

People didn't/can't enroll in those discussions w/ empty seats b/c of conflicts, times, etc. Instead, they waitlist on full sections they really want or can only attend.

Like Bio 1AL: no one wants the 6:30 to 9:30 pm labs even though there are empty seats available... so students waitlist for other labs

I think I read somewhere that there are a couple seats available based on teacher's discretion. Sometimes the teacher wants to pick which 3 or 4 people get off the waitlist.
