R you sure UCD is more Competetive? B/c Irvine ranks 44 while UCD ranks 47 in nation. Also Irvine is MOST SELECTIVE while UCD is MORE SELECTIVE? Am I wrong????

The rankings by U.S. News are not based solely on selectivity, although that is a factor. So it is entirely possible that Davis is more selective than Irvine, but Irvine has a better overall ranking in USNWR.

Although you do have a point with Davis being "more" and Irvine being "most".

I'll look into.

Why does it matter?

Here you go. These data are for 2006 freshmen applicants.

UCI
Applied: 34417
Admitted: 18517
Rate: 53.8%

UCD
Applied: 32635
Admitted 22142
Rate: 67.8%

Thus, from a purely applied/admitted statistical standpoint, Irvine is more selective than Davis.
But I agree that Davis has a better reputation and I would go for UCD.

That US News and Review rank of Irvine at 44 and Davis at 47 is junk. US News made a mistake when ranking Davis. It has something to do with the miscounting of number of professors who possess Phd's or something like that. That's why Davis was ahead of Irvine the year prior, and then this year due to their careless mistake, they slipped Davis down the rankings. Search the archives. This has been stated and covered many times in this forum. Just wait til the new rankings are released.

So Irvine is only ranked higher than Davis this year DUE TO A MISTAKE. UC Davis is a better school than Irvine. Here is MY rankings of best UC's by academic reputation:

1. Berkeley
2. UCLA
3. UCSD
4. Davis
5. Irvine
6. UCSB
7. UCSC
8. UCR
9. UCM because they are too new to have any type of reputation

The reason why UCD's Admissions rate was so high last year is because they over admitted plus the fact that this year they had more applicants. So the admissions rate is going to go much lower i think.
