Regarding biking, make sure you practice riding before you start here if you don't already bike regularly. As someone who never learned to bike as a kid and had to have a roommate help her learn, it really is an inconvenience to have to walk everywhere. Even with Unitrans, you have to go with someone else's schedule and relying on that can be a hassle. Add that to the fact that you'll be more prone to accidents since you can't control the bike as well as someone who's experienced, and it just saves everyone some hassle in the long run if you practice before school starts. Of course a lot of riding a bike comes with just general riding around, which you'll certainly get once you're here even if you're inexperienced.

Oh, and make sure your bike has fenders for when it rains. Or you can learn the hard way

@ PhantomVirgo: what if you're already a student here (at UCD) and don't know how to bike, but would like to learn to? I like using the Unitrans, but it's inconvenient on weekends when I have places to go but there's no Unitrans running past 6pm.

I have a question regarding aggie cash. I had a bunch of meal swipes left over that converted to Aggie Cash. I no longer live in the dorms so I don't have a meal plan but I was wondering if I can use the Aggie Cash to get swiped into the dining commons?

@sopranokitty: How do I do that? Is there anything specific that I have to tell the people at the DC who swipe the card when you enter?

Nope, you just give them the card. They'll know what to do.

I believe I am at risk of academic disqualification. My grades are not very good this quarter aka my first quarter. Will they immediately dismiss me or will they give me a second chance to rectify my grades as long as I meet with an advisor and explain myself? I have scheduled to meet with an advisor regarding this, but I do not know if they'll let me stay for another quarter.

@wishfuldreams: Depending on your GPA, can mean disqualification and will be evaluated for dismissal. Ultimately, the decision for dismissal is from the Dean of your college [Engineering, Letters & Science, etc.]. It may be helpful to read this: UC Davis General Catalog | Probation and Dismissal

In short, if you have a 2.0 or greater, you're fine.

If you have less than a 2.0 and greater than a 1.5, you will be placed on academic probation [AP] for the first time since this is your first quarter [does not mean immediate dismissal]. If you are on AP more than 1 time in a row, you will be evaluated for dismissal.

If you have less than a 1.5 you will be evaluated for dismissal.

Hopefully you are not dishearted by your performance in your first quarter. The first quarter is often the most difficult as you have had an exiguous amount of time to adjust.

I can speak to this personally since I have been on AP 2 times in a row and was subject to dismissal myself. Luckily they gave me one more quarter to redeem myself and I graduated in a little over 4 years. Hang in there!

@PvtPublic: I have D's and F's. It is mainly my midterm and finals score that brought my grades down because I did not do well on them. I am so dead.

I'm new to Davis. I don't attend UCD but Sac City. I was just wondering what does everyone do around here? I like it so far, seems like a cool little college community.

sopranokitty:
repeat notation should just happen; you shouldn't have to do anything, i don't think. i've repeated one class and it's just on my transcript as repeated with the new grade.

ttttastey:
a lot of people like to drink. some people like to smoke weed and a minority like to do other drugs. plenty of people don't do any of these things. there are clubs and such on campus too... what exactly were you looking for?

Does anyone reccomend me taking either UWP 18 or UWP 101? I'm a trasnfer and I completed an English course at my CC that clearned me for ENG 3. I am choosing to take either to improve my writing skills. I'm a sophomore. Is 18 easier than 101 since 101 is an upper div class?

I am a transfer student starting Davis in the fall. I have been looking at the 6 transfer apartments: The Willows, Drake, Lexington, Arbors, Adobe and Arlington Farms. Any comments? pros/cons. any extra input is welcome!
thanks
