NorCalLove: You start filling out your housing app around June. The dorms near the cows are the Tercero dorms, but the cows shouldn't be an issue because I believe they're moving the cows next year.

Relentless355: I prefer doubles, they make sure it's not too crowded, but you also get to meet new people and live with someone new. But it's all a matter of personal preference. I live in South Castilian (Cuarto), and it gets quiet at times, but I still love it. If you want a more social environment, choose Segundo or Tercero.

hey you guys...
if there are any ppl here majoring in computer science or similar majors...
-how are the undergrad research opportunities for Comp Science majors at UC Davis
-are there enough projects to easily get involved ..so that you can list those projects on you resume?

plz provide some details......im comparing this to UCI COmp Science...UCI is specialized in CS....but far away from home...

if u dont know the answer....can you give me some kind of phone number so i can call them and ask them

You absolutely want to live in Segundo. My friends who live in Cuarto complain that it's not social enough, far away from campus, etc. and my friends from Tercero complain that the dining commons is inferior (Segundo has the best DC) and that it is not as nice a location as Segundo.

Segundo is by the ARC, 2 min bike ride from the MU, and close to a shopping center (as is Cuarto). I highly recommend it.

I'd like to add on to mj300's question about C.S. I'm also stuck between both of these schools about that department.

Additional question: Are there women in the program, and women professors? UCI has about 25% women profs, which is above the national average, and women students (though, that said, I was one of two girls at the information program, and the only one in my major). I don't know anything about Davis in this respect. Any information is appreciated!

mj300: there are plenty of research opportunities on campus, even in the computer science department. however, these opportunities won't just plop down in front of you. you need to be proactive and talk to professors about their research, and find one professor's project that interests you.

xcyber347: you usually use some flavor of unix/linux in comp sci, which is why i've found having a mac is really useful (i have a unix command line since it's based off unix). but for really intro classes (ECS10, 15) they just expect you to have windows or some OS that you know how to use. Once you get up past ecs 30, you use linux/unix a lot more.

Fooshy, could you list me some of the a capella groups on campus that a freshman can audition for? Are they well-known/active? Thanks!

RWT: I'm sorry I'm not familiar with any a capella groups, but I haven't really looked into it either. Maybe somebody else has suggestions?

Weirdhobo: I was not a great student, I had a 2.99 cumulative, 3.26 UC GPA. What redeemed me was my test scores (2090 SAT, 750 Math Level 2, and 690 Literature) and the fact that I had one countless awards in Debate. I'd say that with a 3.6-3.7 weighted and good test scores (1850+ SAT, 650+ SAT 2) you'd have a very good chance of getting in.
