Posted this in another thread but might as well post it here too:

For any current UCD students or admissions officers: how important is orientation? I'm going on vacation this summer to a different country and won't come back until late August, so I would have to change tickets, plans, etc. Apparently I can make it up from UCD Admissions' post above, but would it impact me significantly at least my first year at UCD? Thanks for the help

What's the most important thing to know as an incoming freshman? (Vague, but just give me your two cents)

Weirdhobo: UC GPA (when I applied) was calculated as 4 (A) 3 (B) 2 (C) 1 (D) 0 (F). This means there are no A-'s or B-'s or B+'s, everything is on a flat scale-- A B C D F. This helps you if you have a lot of B-'s and A-'s, but hurts you if you have lots of B+s and C+s.

pike: Summer Orientation is pretty important. It's when you work out your class schedule with a adviser, and take all your placement tests. It makes your start at UC Davis so much smoother.

kmass: Academically, know where your classes are-- I didn't and one of my professors gave me an evil stare when I came in late. Socially, get to know your roommates and suitemates and people who live on your floor! Not only will this make the first week much more fun, but you'll have lots of these people in your classes, and it always helps to have a friend in a class.

Okay, I have a few questions...
1. What is one thing you would have liked to have known coming into Davis as a freshman that you know now?
2. How are the football games? I'm really excited to go to an actual college game.
3. Would it be really beneficial to be in the Davis Honors Challenge? It sounds like a wonderful program.
Thanks!

brightandshiny88: 1) Don't be scared of the RAs or upperclassmen. Davis is a nice community and you'll find that lots of the upperclassmen are really willing to help freshmen. 2) FOOTBALL GAMES ROCK. The spirit is just f$#!in awesome. And they'll be all the more awesome next year with our brand spankin' new stadium!!! BTW we're playing San Jose State next year for our exhibition and they're a D1A school, so it'll be an exciting game. 3) I don't know, I know I was invited to the DHC, but I didn't join because there are additional requirements that you have to do, and I'm a guy who likes to do his own thing and not get bogged down with additional requirements. Personally, I just found research opportunities and jumped on them.

In terms of dorms, do you know if people have been happy with the quad setup? I like the idea that you'll have an area just for a bedroom but it won't be as anti-social as a suite style set up. Do you have any advice about whether or not i should put this as my choice for room configuration? Any pros or cons to it?

The only con to how many people live with you is if it will prevent you from sleeping or studying, and also if you think you'll have enough comfortable living space. I don't really know much about the quad living space, but I know people with the 3-per-room config say it's pretty crammed...

2. Football is going to be insane next year. Class of 2011 is going to be the first class to have 4 years in the new stadium and the first class to have 4 years of D1. Can't ask for a better time to come to the school in terms of sports.

Check out the Aggie Pack photo section at www.aggiepack.com for a preview of what it's going to be like next year. UC Davis has always had a lot of school pride, and if we have 1/10 of the success of UCLA/CAL in D1, I guarantee that Davis will be known for having the most school pride of any UC.

3. Traditions: Band Uh!, Aggie Fight, the EPIC QUAD BATTLE, Whole Earth Festival, AGGIE PACK TUBE SOCK MADNESS!, Homecoming BONFIRE, etc. You'll soon find out that Davis is a very special place with a feeling all its own.
