UCD or UCSD

I'm having a hard time coming to a decision. I am leaning slightly towards Davis since I have heard so many good things about it, but the weird thing is that they aren't giving me as much aid as SD, and much more in direct loans. Also, UCSD is giving me the Chancellors Scholarship which seems to have really good benefits, such as the faculty mentor program. So I was wondering which school would be better for me, since I plan to double major in Environmental Science/policy and History. If i asked the financial aid office for more aid, would they give it to me?

Hi koolaznpygmy,
As I told you over in the general UC thread, UC Davis excells over all other UC's in environmental sciences. I am guessing that might be why you have been offered less aid. That being said, what do you have to lose by calling the admissions department and asking them to match what UCSD is offering? I imagine you are a competitive applicant or you wouldn't have such a nice offer in the first place.

Around my house we have a couple of sayings that apply here.

I'm also having problems deciding between Davis (I could participate in MURRPS), or Berkeley. I want to major in math, but not sure after that.

EER can you visit both schools? Seeing the campus and getting a feel for student life really helps.

Often times I see far too many people putting far too much weight on rankings, financial aid, and general statistics, my advice to you is to just go out and see the campuses. Who knows you may change your major, rankings may change when your applying for jobs, find the school that fits you!

In my totally biased opinion, Davis provides a far better college experience than UCSD. It just seems that UCSD has one mission and that is to be the highest ranked campus and ascend into the stratosphere of acedemia at the expense of student life.

There is no real social aspect to UCSD. With the separate colleges, the lack of any semblance of a quad, no football, a serious lack of student services, and groups, it seems that UCSD has sacrificed the satisfaction of their students and social life and focuses solely on academics. If college for you is strictly studying and getting your degree, purely academic, than go to UCSD.

For me UC Davis has the perfect balance academics and social life. As a prestigious UC, students take school here very seriously and attaining our degree is priority # 1. But the campus really does want you to be active and just happy. With things such as the ARC, Unitrans, Intramurals, a Football team, and over 400 school sponsored organizations, UCD is a place where you can really enjoy and yourself at school and say that your time at college was the best time of your life.

Don't forget that UCD is home to one of the largest internship programs in the nation. UCD is commited to helping students find meaningful work experience as both students and graduates.

I don't really care much about rankings or prestige, I just want to go to a college that is fun but academically challenging also. Thats why I would rather go to UCD, but financial aid is a big deal for me. My parents won't be able to pay that much, and I will probably go to grad school so I don't want to emerge with tons of loans. Davis has not repackaged my aid based on my revised FAFSA so I don't know how much I'll be getting. If Davis does give me a bit more money I'd probably go there.

If you're looking for a fun and academically challenging college, UC Davis is the one. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get as much financial aid as you needed for Davis though. =/ From what I've heard though, UCSD is a much more "up tight" school, but I know I'm gonna get slammed by someone for saying that. =P
