Breaks

My brothers are getting married and I need to be out of the country to attend their wedding. Currently, there is no date yet but they're planning on the wedding soon, so I went to the registrar site to check the schedule for the 07-08 year. I was wondering if im a freshman then i won't have to attend the commencemnt after the quarter ends right? so after the fall quarter and finals week ends, there are no more classes so we are free to leave the campus? There are also a time gaps between that date and the chrismas holiday. So in general, am i allow to leave the campus from the day the final ends and return the day the winter quarter starts?
Also, when i heard of college, i always heard of spring breaks and stuff, so when are the spring break? Is it only for a week between the end of winter quarter and the beginning of spring quarter?

Commencement is for graduating seniors, if they choose to go.

As soon as your finals are over, that's when your vacation starts. You can check your finals schedule for the classes you are registered for to know when your last final is.

I believe for winter break they close the dorms anyway, so you have to leave.

College isn't like high school. The vast majority of classes don't even take role & participation isn't part of your grade. So, technically the only days you HAVE to show up are the midterms & final exams. If you need to miss a day of class for something, whatever... you don't need to tell the professor anything.

You'll have to look at the academic calendar to know when exactly Spring Break is. It's the break between winter & spring quarters, only a week long.

I don't think they do, but I haven't lived in the dorms since 02/03 school year, so I don't know the most recent policies.

IIRC the dorms do close for spring break/winter break...you have to clear out.

Yes, dorms close for spring/winter breaks (at the end of each quarter). Be sure to bring out your food.....i ended up with 12904810247012491 flies in the room because my damn roommate left food out. Luckily, their pest control people came and killed all of them the next day.

So, I know I'm getting really specific here, but referring to the calendar at http://www.ucdavis.edu/calendar/calendar_0708.html this means the dorms would be closed from Sunday 3/22 to Thursday 3/27?

Corollary question... if the quarter starts Thurs. 3/27 but instruction doesn't begin til Monday 3/31, what happens during that time? Do we have to be there? I know for fall quarter there's like some welcome week activities and what not, but for other quarters, you really just need to be there for the first day of class, right?

15 Dec 2007 Winter Break. Halls close at noon
04 Jan 2008 Halls open at 8am. Meals commence with dinner

23 Mar 2008 Spring recess. Halls close at noon
26 Mar 2008 Halls open at 8am.

No, you don't have to be there early, but for people that want/have to go back, they can.
